Chapter 48 : The Dark Knight

When they arrived, the doctors were already pumping the young girl's stomach. Joyce sat in the waiting room, caressing the dog's head on her knees and holding the small cat against her torso, with her son next to her.

Will couldn't believe it. It was supposed to be HIS day, only him and his mother but nooo! Jane had to be here like a poor victim and now they were waiting at the hospital to know how she was! Someone called his mother, making him more upset, because, now, she had to take care of all the papers! He hoped she wouldn't pay for all this shit, Jane wasn't part of the family! She wasn't even his friend, and his mom was taking care of her only because she had pity for her, not because she thought she had a chance! It was obvious that none of them had a chance! Now that they weren't at school anymore, they would do crimes again and go back in their cells, where they should have stayed!

Joyce was at the counter, waiting for her insurance to answer the secretary. She saw the Chief Hopper with another man entering the building and going to her.

- Why are you here? asked Joyce.

- They called me. For Jane, answered Hopper.

- Oh, you remember her name, I'm impressed!

- You really think I don't care about her!?

- Um...let me guess...yes! Absolutely!

- I did all I could for her!

- You treated her like a file! A burden! You were all so satisfied at this ceremony, because none of them died or went back in jail! But them, they knew it was wrong, that they wouldn't make it because they don't know how! stated Joyce. She didn't need a cop! She needed an adult, a parent to take care of her and you, you placed her with her aunt!? The sister of the man she tried to kill!?

- It's the only family member we found, told Hopper.

- What about her sister!? Why don't you look for that guy she was with that night, to innocent her!? Like that, Jane would live with someone who loves her, and someone who would take care of her!

- But this guy doesn't exist!

- Jane saw him, he exists, he is just hiding, like they all do because of the way you all treat them.

- I've never hit her, or the others, said firmly the man.

- I know, she is not scared of you, I wasn't talking about you but the others. My son told me how they arrested her last time, it was awful and shameful.

- I know! But, sadly, it's not illegal. So now, let me do my job, I know what I'm doing.

- I'm not sure.

Hopper sighed with his nose and walked away, ignoring her remark. Joyce waited more at the counter, doing more papers and finally debating with her insurance for hours! After lots of arguments, they accepted to take in charge Jane for this time. The mother went back in the waiting room, exhausted.

- We could just go.

- What? frowned Joyce.

- We don't have to stay here, we could just go, she can take care of herself, told Will with an upset tone.

- No, she can't take care of herself, that's what nobody wants to understand! If she could, she wouldn't overdose!

- Maybe if she-

- If she what!? If she wasn't born in this family!? If her mother didn't leave and if her father wasn't violent with her!? If her sister wasn't send in jail for something she didn't do!? That's what you were going to say!? You really think she chose everything that happened to her!?
