Tears burn his eyes,
His stomach is tight,
Like a clenched fist,
He looks to his mother,
Hunger and hopelessness,
Eating away at this young man,
Feeding his fear,
Of obscurity.
He asks,
"Sizakudlani mama?"

Sadness and helplessness,
Fill her heart,
A rivulet of tears,
Burn her eyes,
As she looks at her son,
Hunger etched on his face,
A painful sight,
For any parent.
With an empty stomach,
And an equally empty response,
She says,
"Angazi mntanami..."
