A bit of back story - yami was apart of rias gremory peerage since he was eight years old. Yami was Rias first pawn up until rias ran to the human world to avoid the arranged mirage with riser Phoenix taking her peerage with her. Rias had 'asked' some for particle control of kuoh territory to which sona agreed to it after wards rias brought on a new pawn issei hydudo. During all of this yami had helped both kiba and koneko with there past and there selfs, issei was jealous of yami to the point he had convinced rias and akeno that yami was not as strong as he to which rias agreed. Two days later yami was sent to deal with a stray S class devil but was meant with rias and akeno attacking him to which they killed him. Now two weeks have past both kiba and koneko were devatsed about there friends death while rias issei and akeno were happy with it but what rias didn't know was that yami wasn't dead he was very much alive and in another world for the past two weeks becoming something more powerful then any supernatural being.
