I yawned agitated, my early alarm cutting through the thick silence i had been lulled to sleep in. I sat up still dazed, my cheek sticking slightly to the fabric of the sheets. "wow i must've really been out" i thought to myself laughing. finally starting to clear the fog from my head. I walked to the bathing, opening tiktok ritually as i did every morning. After watching a few tiktoks i checked the time, seeing that it was time to start getting ready. I had initially thought booking a last minute flight to visit my parents would be charming and nice, but as i was washing off the sleep of the previous night at 4am in a 3 star hotel, i started regretting my decision. After my rushed shower i got finished getting ready and headed to the front of the hotel. Stopping at reception I gave the woman a kind smile, returning my room key and wishing her a good morning. I grabbed a banana i saw sitting at the breakfast table, and walked to the front of the building, waiting for my uber to pull up. I started in on the banana, not expecting to be so hungry this early. After scarfing down half the banana my ride came, a sleek red car that looked way to nice to be ubering around. Yawning out of my slight daze i quickly pulled my suitcase towards the car as it came to a stop in front of me. I stepped into the car and put my suitcase beside me. Situating myself, i buckled my seatbelt and looked up to the driver, giving a small smile and a quick nod before looking down.
"No food in here." the driver said seemingly upset. I looked down confused seeing the half eaten banana still in my hand.
"Oh this!" I chuckled laughing it off slightly embarrassed. I quickly finished the rest of the banana and threw the peel out of the car window before he quickly started driving off.
"i'm really sorry about that, i totally forgot that was in my hand!" i laughed casually trying to lighten the mood but I didn't even receive as much as an acknowledgment from him. The smile faded from my face and i looked down at my phone, deciding to distract myself until this awkward car ride was over.
Arriving at the airport I mentally groaned seeing the long lines of people everywhere. When the car completely stopped I silently stepped out grabbing my things and giving the driver a final small smile, which was, unsurprisingly, returned with a bored glance as he drove away silently. After checking my bag in, I made my way to security. Looking around at the long line i sighed quietly and pulled out my phone, figuring i'd be here a while. When it was finally my turn to go through the scanners i got a few dirty looks from the security guards. I internally rolled my eyes looking at my full water bottle, realizing i forgot to pour it out before getting in line. After a couple more stares and some disgusted mumblings from a few others standing in line i finally made it through security to the gates. I checked my phone realizing the long security line had caused me to be late for my flight. Checking my ticket I saw I was at a gate on the other side of the airport. Taking a deep breath i found where I was supposed to be heading and quickly made my way there, praying to the gods i wouldn't miss my flight.
Running up to my gate 5 minutes late the attendant looked annoyed.
"Sorry sir but we already closed the terminal you'll have to catch the next flight available" she said, feigning pity. I shook my head frustrated but knew i was the only one to blame. I sat down with a sigh, deciding to call my sister and let her know I'd be late getting home.
"You wouldn't believe the day I had!" i sighed exasperated by everything that had already happened in the past hour.
"First I got yelled at by my uber driver, then i missed the flight, and now i'm sitting here about ready to rip my hair out!" I spit out. She chuckled softly, she had always been the more patient one. She was a year older than me, with the same shadowed blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Although I was no giraffe myself, she was about 2 inches shorter than me, something i gave her a lot of shit for.
"Calm down Blayne you're just gonna upset yourself even more. Mom and dad are gonna be thrilled to see you and it'll be worth all the trouble you've gone through."
"will it?" i snapped back, getting a little upset with how she brushed off my feelings. I hadn't seen my parents since i came out two years ago. I thought it'd be easy to just pop back in their lives but the longer i sat with my thoughts the more i began to stress.
"Im sorry for snapping," i sighed.
"im excited to see them obviously but i'm nervous as well. they didn't take the news of me being gay very well and the last thing i need is to just stir the pot by being there. What if they don't even want to see me?" i asked anxiously. She let out a small breath of air, her tone becoming softer as she said,
"They are your family and they wouldn't abandon you no matter who you end up falling in love with."
i smiled softly, my nerves finally settling.
"Thank you Aubree, I really needed to hear that."
We finished up our conversation talking about how excited we were to see each other before i decided to end the call, not wanting to burn through all my battery before the flight.
After what felt like an eternity, more people began gathering around the gate and through some eavesdropping I figured out i had an hour before the flight would begin boarding. I checked my phone, seeing no messages or calls and turned it off. I only had 30 percent left, and i wanted to save it for the long trip ahead of me. I looked around, scoping out the people i could potentially be sitting next to. I noticed a lot of older individuals, luckily not many parents with young children, and only a few people my own age. With my luck i'd be sat next to a family but i figured it was useless to worry about until i was about to board. I looked around again, spotting a few small food areas and a bathroom. I got up and got a sandwich, going back to my seat and started quietly eating, trying not to bother the people around me. It wasn't too bad of a sandwich, not by airplane food standards at least. After finishing the last bite I decided it was probably close to boarding time and i turned my phone back on. With only 10 minutes left till boarding I quickly used the bathroom, filled up my water bottle, and sat back down. nerves and excitement ran through me as people began boarding.
"was this really the right choice for me? can i handle the possibility that my parents will reject me and turn me away from my own childhood home?" i thought to myself, nerves and anxiety suddenly filling my stomach. i couldn't change the plans now so i got up when my section was called and made my way onto the plane,
"Here goes nothing," i said to myself softly as i found my way to my seat. Little did i know that the seat number i got would change my life forever.
