Jane turned to her and shrugged. It was apparently a yes because the black girl followed them inside. Once the door closed, Jane and Melissa took a moment to look around.
- It's the entrance and waiting room, if you don't want to wait in the halls you can come here, the examination room is right there, explained Joyce.
The two girls nodded and went to the examination room. It was a small room, with a desk for the nurse, a bed with a curtain in case, and another door for the toilets.
- So, (close the door) Jane, right? It won't be long, don't worry, reassured the woman. Here, (hold out a recipient) it's for the urine.
Jane took it and looked closely to it. She didn't know if she should, they could use what they would find inside against her and send her back to jail.
- The police won't know the results, only me, told Joyce, seeing the girl hesitating.
The young girl looked at her friend who just shrugged. Neither her didn't know if she could trust her. She didn't say anything and let the Melissa and the nurse alone.
- If you had to describe her in one word, what would you say? asked Joyce.
- Loyal, answered Melissa with no hesitation.
- Loyal, repeated the woman with a thinking tone. It's a good thing.
- Yep, especially in jail.
- I don't doubt on it. You seem close to each other.
- She saved my ass, many times. Three years in the same cell, it creates bonds.
- It's good, it's better to not be alone in this kind of place.
The conversation had been cut by Jane coming back in the room.
- Nice piss, mocked Melissa.
- Shut up, replied Jane which made laugh her friend.
- Ok, now, go on the bed and took off your jacket.
Jane obeyed and went on the bed.
- You're ok? asked Joyce.
Jane coldly nodded. Joyce smiled to her and noticed small in the hollow of her elbow. It was certainly not for blood tests. She put the needle in the arm.
- How is school? asked Joyce.
- Not bad, answered Jane.
- Better than jail, added Melissa.
- Yeah, I can believe that, lightly chuckled Joyce. You know my son?
- No, told Jane.
- His name is Will, he is friend with Beverly.
- Oh, they don't dig me so it don't matter.
- They need time, it's all new for them, they weren't expecting to see ex-prisoners in class with them, it can be scary.
- Even when we're nice they don't dig us, said Jane, thinking of Grumpy in particular. We are a shame.
- People who think that should be ashamed, you seem totally correct for me.
- Yeah, maybe we're not, told sharply Jane.
- Clara is nice, smirked Melissa.
Joyce was surprised to see Jane lightly smiling too.
- Oh, Clara, your girlfriend? asked the mother.
- Nope, just for fun, but she is nice, she don't look at us like animals, explained Jane.
