At one time, Natasha Romanoff was in love. The woman who had her heart was named Elaine Vagner. Elaine was different than anyone Natasha had ever met.

How so? Elaine had inhuman abilities. She possessed the power of solar manipulation, making her one of the more powerful mutants in the world.

Elaine and Natasha worked for a while. Until they didn't. Because down to their cores, they were different people. With different values.

Natasha was loyal. She was the ride or die. Natasha believed in order, she believed always trying to maintain peace. She tried to do things in the most logical and diplomatic way.

It wasn't that Elaine wasn't loyal. She was, but very selectively. Elaine was chaos. Elaine believed in fighting and speaking out. She refused to be silent and she refused to sit back and let things she didn't want to happen happen. Elaine didn't care who she stepped on, in the end, she looked out for herself.

And that was where the problem lied. Natasha was a team player, Elaine wasn't. Natasha had spent her life trying to be better, while Elaine was simply indifferent.

But because fate works so mysteriously, it brought the ex-lovers back together for a time. Only to have them torn apart yet again.

When the Avengers are split on an issue that seemingly can't be resolved it starts a war. A civil war. With Natasha taking Tony's side, and to everyone's surprise, Elaine taking Steve's.

The two women are forced apart in a way that doesn't seem repairable. But no matter how much they may hate each other, being apart is torture.

It's death by a thousand cuts.
