Cairo was ecstatic when Esma agreed to marry him, after 3 years of traveling around the world together. They'd finally settled down in a small town and Cairo had built her an extravagant castle, turrets and all, after which he immediately focused his attention to the people surrounding him in need of help. Esma was somewhat content for the 3 years that they'd traveled together, but she was growing weary with his generosity.
'There's always someone else in need, but what about me? I crave your attention too . . . '

One cloudy midnight, Esma was slumbering in her castle when she heard a noise on the other side of the room. She slowly opened her eyes and turned her head towards the noise, where she saw a person rummaging through a drawer of hers, remnants of clothes and jewelry laying on the floor surrounding them.
''Who goes there?'' She barely whispered, her voice hoarse with anxiety and fear.
The figure scurried towards the window, leaving a mess in their path. Before Esma could even stand up, the intruder took one last glance at the room and jumped out of the window and into the darkness. She sat on her bed, stunned at what had just happened. There was only one thing she remembered about the person, and that was their eyes. The slits of moonlight between the clouds had shone on that one feature, making them gleam a vibrant yellow.

In the morning, Esma rushed to Cairo's room, explaining the event of the previous night to him. Indeed, he was furious and asked if there was anything at all that he could do for her, to make up for the horrible deed. Her brilliant brown eyes glinted with mischief, as she decided to take advantage of the situation at hand. What she had said next, he listened to without complaint:
''Kill anyone and everyone you come across with bright, yellow eyes. Whether they be child, mother, or father, kill them.''
And so he did. Not one person could stop him, for he was blinded by love and fury, a most dangerous combination. Everywhere he went, blood was shed. Friends died by his hand. Children as well. Even his own father, murdered. It went on like this for a long while, longer than it should've, until Esma was satisfied with her work.
''Cairo . . . you have done well. Come to me, my darling.''She cooed to him, her eyes displaying forced affection.
He came to her, blood dripping from his hands and smeared on his cheek. He grinned when Esma opened up her arms to him, beckoning him over. Cairo embraced her with such love and adoration. She ran a hand through his hair and he hummed when Esma's hands found their way to the back of his neck, stroking it. Her eyes swirled with mixed emotions and it was over in a flash.
Esma watched with an emotionless face as his body fell to the ground with a thud, crimson blood spilling from the slit across his throat. Cairo's eyes struggled to settle on an emotion, staring at the woman he still loved so much as confusion swirled throughout them. She was grinning madly down at him.
His clouded, yellow eyes glanced at her as they glazed over, Cairo's blank stare freezing on her. A laugh bubbled deep in her throat as tears painted her cheeks.
And Esma sat there, letting the tears fall onto her bloody hands and the laughter escape her and into the night. What had started in the night ended in the night as well, but it would leave a scar for many years to come.
