Imagine you found a girl, almost dead, in the water. And you pulled her out, called an ambulance. Carried her up the beach. Performed CPR to try and get her breathing.

It would be rude not to visit, right? To not even try to see if she was fine? It's sort of my responsibility if she isn't. I mean, I found her, and who else does she have, if she's a Jane Doe?

So I went to the hospital.

Fact number two: Deep comas usually last for two to four weeks. At that point, they go into a "vegetative state". That's when they're not really conscious... just keeping themselves alive.

She could still wake up, they told me.

Her bag was still sitting in the corner, but it wasn't wet anymore. I left it there.

I just sat in the chair for a while, waiting. Watching her breathe evenly and hoping that it wasn't too late. That I didn't get to her after her chance of waking up had gone to zero.
