I shut my locker close as I hear the bell ring, announcing that I have two minutes to get to math class. Scurrying down the hallway, I catch a glimpse of my friend, Casi, walking towards me.
"Hi" she utters, walking beside me as we make our way to Mr. Whitaker's class.
Soon enough, we are both sitting in class, staring at the board as Mr. Whitaker begins teaching.
"What's got you in such a mood?" Asks Daniel, my guy best friend.
"Nothing Daniel, I am just pretty upset at the moment and trust me, being in math class doesn't make it any better" I sigh.
"It was Nathaniel wasn't it?" He asks.
"Yup, she's still not over him" she mocks, glancing at me.
"Well sorry that I am upset that it's senior year and the boy that I've liked for years hasn't once noticed me. Plus, I didn't give you shit when you had a fling with Jake, take it easy." I roll my eyes and focus back on the math problem.
Soon enough math class is over and I find myself walking towards the cafeteria. I walk inside and take in all the loud chatter coming from the food line. I make my way into the line and spot my friend Jennifer grabbing her plate.
I grab myself some food and pay the cashier. I lean against the wall as I wait for Jennifer to pay.
I see her approaching me, so I turn and make my way towards an empty lunch table in the corner but I stop once I hear her voice.
"Let's have lunch at the football field, no?" She asks. "My brother has soccer practice and asked me to come."
I look down, trying to make up any excuse to not go.
But before I even get a single word out, I feel a hand wrap around my arm and drag me out the door.
"Well shit" I think. Now I have to sit and watch Nathaniel play soccer while I act like I'm doing just fine.
I trail behind Jenni, and take a seat right next to her as we reach the top of the bleachers. From the very top, I see all the boys run around kicking the soccer ball.
"You know, I really shouldn't be here" I tell her, as I catch a glimpse of blonde hair running across the field.
"Huh, I guess he really did make varsity" I mumble, seeing that Nathaniel's brown hair is now adorned by small highlights.
We begin eating our lunch, watching the boys fight for the ball and cheer when they score a goal. Ten minutes go by, and I turn to see Jenni standing, climbing down the bleachers, and approaching her brother on the sideline.
I take this as my chance to bolt and dash down the bleachers.
"¡Fernandez!" a loud voice makes me freeze in the middle of the gates causing me to close my eyes and turn around.
I look forward and recognize Jessie waving at me. I slowly walk towards him and Jenni. I start to wave when I feel muscular arms wrap around me.
Taken back, I lay my head on Jessie's chest and awkwardly pull away after ten seconds. I shyly smile at him, tucking a piece of hair behind my ear.
You see, Jessie is Jennifer's twin brother and although we've never been best friends he's always been very sweet to me, and for that he was my favorite soccer player.
"I haven't seen you in a while, you coming to the homecoming game?" He asks.
"Uhh I am not sur— yes she is!" I am cut off by Jenni.
But before I can reach over and smack her, I see a mop of blonde hair run next to Jessie.
Avoiding eye contact, I continue staring at Jessie.
"Well, I do hope you go with my sister so that she won't do anything crazy this year" he snickers, watching Jenni's face fall.
I can't help but laugh as I remember what happened last year at homecoming.
"Well now that you say that, I will definitely be there"
"Awesome, see you there Evelyn!" He cracks a smile and runs back to the field with Nathaniel following.
I run a hand through my hair finally leaving the field with Jenni besides me.
"He totally noticed you today" she grins while elbowing me.
I furrow my eyebrows. "Who?" I ask.
"Oh please, I'm not talking about my brother. I'm talking about Nate. He was staring at you the whole time"
"Doesn't mean anything Jen, it was simply because your brother was talking to me... nothing less, nothing more" I sigh.
"Take advantage of this for once and make something out of it" she shakes her head and continues walking.
I rub my face, ignoring the heat rushing to my pink cheeks as I'm left wondering whether or not she's right.
