My dad didn't come home for another three hours or so. I had started doing my homework when I got home from school, and I was putting the last of my notebooks into my bag when I heard my father's car pull into the driveway.
Putting my cell phone in my back pocket, I jogged out of my room and down the stairs before he even entered the house.
My father walked in and automatically he had that aura about him; the aura that gave off a feeling of superiority and power.
The aura of an alpha.
"Hey Leah," he greeted me as he stepped over the threshold and closed the door behind him.
"Hi dad. Listen, can I ask you something?"
"In a minute, I just got home. Wait until I put my things away and then come into my office, alright?" He walked into the kitchen and said a quick hello to my brother and sister. Then he went down the hall to his private office.
"What do you need to talk to dad about?" Reece butted in.
"None of your business," I replied in a snarky tone. I didn't know if my brother knew anything like Izzy did, but I didn't want to risk saying anything that was supposed to be confidential.
Casey snickered quietly. "Don't bother Reece. You know how stubborn she is!"
"Gee, thanks. Love this family," I scoffed and walked down the hall to talk to my dad.
I knocked lightly on the door before cracking it open slightly and peeking in.
"Well come in Leah."
I opened the door the rest of the way and hopped into the room. My bare feet touched the plush carpet and I shut the door behind me.
"What did you want to ask me?" my father inquired.
"Uh... well I was talking to Isabelle at school today and she told me something that sparked my interest..."
"Yes? About what?" I could tell he was growing a little impatient. He always got like this because he was alpha. In charge of everything having to do with our pack, he had to go away a lot. Most weekends he was never home because he had things to take care of.
"She told me that there's another pack moving into our territory. Like, to stay here. Is that true?"
He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. It was all the confirmation I needed.
"But why? We're a big enough pack by ourselves. We've never had any problems, so why are thy coming?"
"Leah, it's a complex situation. Basically, they're going to help us protect this town. The vampires aren't causing a huge problem right now, but in the future... well, you never know." He turned his chair toward the computer screen and started typing furiously.
"So what you're saying is that we can't handle this on our own? It's getting that bad?"
He sighed with exasperation. I could tell that this was a subject thy he'd rather avoid discussing.
I didn't really know what else to say, so I turned in my heels to walk out.
"Oh, and I expect you to show the new wolves around school. The pack will move here tomorrow and the kids will start school on Wednesday."
Great. Now I get to play freaking babysitter.
"Yeah whatever." Because I was the daughter of the alpha, I got stuck with a lot of crappy responsibilities to take care of.
I jogged out of my dad's office and passed by the kitchen before I started running out the front door. Not that I was angry, I was just really frustrated.
