Chapter Twenty Three

Start from the beginning

"She'll be home soon," Lottie assured me.

I wanted her to be right. I wanted Cassidy to walk right through the front door right now.

Fizzy walked into the kitchen from the living room.

"There's a car outside Jane's with someone in military uniform inside," she said.

"Thanks," I said quickly.

I was out the door in seconds. I passed the car as I walked around to Jane's. The car was black, and all of the windows in the back were slightly tinted. I recognised the driver, but I couldn't remember the name. Cassidy wasn't inside the car.

I pretended not to notice the car and continued walking to Jane's blue front door.

I walked into the house because the door was always left unlocked when my mum was in the house. I found everyone in the living room. Edward was by the window watching the car.

"There's someone in uniform in it," I stated bluntly.

"Oh God," Jane muttered. She looked like she had seen a ghost.

The car door eventually opened and a man with dark blonde hair and in a white Navy uniform got out.

Edward hid in the shadows of the curtain as the man looked at the window.

"I know him," I said, but nobody asked me how.

The man went to close the car door, but he stopped and looked back at the house. He looked up to one of the windows on the second floor. Could he see the light blue curtains in Cassidy's room?

"Where's Cassidy?" John whispered.

I didn't want to know. What was this about? Had she- no, Cassidy couldn't be, could she?

I refused to let myself believe it. Cassidy wasn't dead.

The man began to walk towards the front door of the house. Each step looked like a conflicted movement. He didn't want to be here.

He eventually reached the front door, and the sound of the doorbell broke the silence that none of us had realised we had been maintaining.

Jane's face went ghostly white and her eyes dulled. It was like she was remembering a nightmare. However, she got up and went to the door anyway.

I walked out of the living room behind her.

The door opened to reveal the man. Now that I was looking closely, I could see that he was about my age. He had dark blonde hair and green eyes, but he was so familiar.

"Mrs Davis?" he asked.

"Y-yeah," Jane stuttered.

"I'm Lieutenant James Oak. I'm the commanding officer in your daughter's squadron. May I come in?" he asked.

I remembered who he was now. I had met him once, about four years ago when Cassidy talked me in to going to a military ceremony where she was awarded her first medal because no one else would go with her.

"Would you like a cup of tea?" Jane asked politely.

"No thank you Mrs Davis," James replied.

Jane walked into the living room where everyone was now pretending to be occupied with something.

Jane cleared her throat. All of the eyes in the room were suddenly on her.

"This is Lieutenant Oak, from Cassidy's squadron," she said weakly. "Have a seat Lieutenant," she added stiffly.

Ever since Cassidy's dad had died, Jane had had... issues about there being anything to do with the armed forces in her house. She had treated Cassidy so badly since the passing of her husband.

"Would you mind telling us what this is about Lieutenant?" I asked.

He looked at me for a while.

"May I advise you to sit down Mr. Tomlinson?" he said finally.

It was more of an order than a request, but I wouldn't sit down until I knew what was going on.

"Not until I know what is going on," I stated.

He sighed and looked around the room. His eyes lingered on a picture of Cassidy and I above the fireplace. He then turned to look at Jane.

"I'm- Mrs Davis, your daughter, Lieutenant Cassidy Davis, went missing on June 15th," he said.

I sank into the chair that I had been standing in front of.
