A wise woman once told me that there will always be a bigger fish. Whether she was quoting The Phantom Menace or not still confuses me to this day, but the truth still stands: always be prepared for the time that that fish comes for you...

My name is Dean Overton, or D as my friend calls me. As you can see from the missing "s" from "friend", I am not the most popular kid at school. This will be my senior year at high school, yet freshmen still love to shove me in lockers. If there were an Olympic sport for being the most bullied kid in school, I would be the gold, silver, and bronze medalist. You would think that I would have some emotional support from my parents, but they disowned me for being a disappointment. My normal day consists of waking up, riding on the floor of the bus since no one would care to sit next to me, arriving at school, getting shoved into a locker a few minutes after arrival, going to classes, getting beat up on the way to lunch, eating lunch, and then going home to my own tiny apartment.
And with that explanation over with, I can start telling this story from where everything began: on the edge of the roof of my apartment building.
I remember looking down trying to find some glimmer of hope that I could look forward to in the future, but all I could see was myself disappointing everyone around me and not amounting to anything. I backed up and thought, "What am I doing? Is this what I want to be remembered by? Some kid who killed himself because he was bullied? No way."
The words I thought were empty and meaningless to myself. I walked back up on the ledge and looked far into the distance seeing a flash of light stream across the sky. "Well since I have nothing to lose," I mumbled as I closed my eyes and thought of a wish.
"I WISH I COULD DO AWAY WITH THIS LIFE AND BECOME SOMEONE BETTER!" I yelled as loud as I could as I leaned over and dropped from the 20 story building. I felt the wind hit my body as I plummeted to the ground and god knows how fast. Then all I saw was white and thought, "I'm finally dead." Or so I thought...

"Wait what?" I said confused.
As the white slowly faded, I regained my sight only to see myself surrounded by men covered head to toe in golden and silver armor. A man draped in silky and velvety clothing sitting in a large chair stood up and knelt in front of me. As soon as he did all the men surrounding me did the same. The man in the fancy clothing raised his head and said, "Hero! Thank you for gracing our country with your aid!"
I looked around and realized that none of what was happening resembled anything that was familiar.
"WHAT THE FUCK!!!"

Thank you for reading the first chapter of The Returned. I thought of this idea while reading tons and tons of isekai manga. I fell in love with the genre despite the overuse and repetitiveness from each story, but I've only seen a handful of them that take place after the adventures.
This is my first time trying creative writing so please don't be too harsh, but feedback is always welcome.
I really hope that all of you enjoy this story!! Please share it with your friends and tell me what you like about it. There will be more to come I promise.
