it's only a couple times that aiden tries to communicate with their soulmate. once, after their mother died, the second time, after they had a bad night and needed comfort, and lastly, when they meet alex.
they gave up.
they never responded, what was the point in trying?
so, they decided that whenever they felt lonely, they'd draw on anything. anything. their bedroom wall by their head of their bed, completely covered in drawings. their arm when they're at school and forgot their sketchbook.
it seems to go on forever. their soulmate never once tries to communicate. never once answers, never once have they commented on anything.
alex and honey tell them to continue trying to get in contact with their soulmate.
aiden doesn't want to try anymore.
they don't want to be alone either. but they don't want to try to get in contact.

they go months without writing or drawing on their skin. months. nothing from their soulmate.
they tried. and they failed. the only hope they have is that they're not dead or that they're alone.

they say that you know the pain of your soulmate dying.
they say it hurts like hell.
like nothing imaginable. shortly after exchanging names and phone numbers, aiden feels the awful pain.
sad. angry. like they'd been shot.
they'd met him once.
once.
and then they lose him the next day.
they dial the first number they can think of. honey. honey answers in a hurry.
she listens to aiden's sobs. listens to the way that they complain about the world being cruel. she takes care of how they're feeling. she makes sure they know that they're loved.
the hole in their chest says otherwise.
it felt like someone ripped their heart out. broke it 3 times over and then stomped on it.
honey holds hope that aiden's soulmate is alright.
aiden doesn't.

when the news comes that he did die. and it was a brutal car accident, aiden breaks. tears rush down their face. and all they want is another word from his mouth. another time hearing him say their name.
another good morning text.
aiden shouldnt have hid the fact they had a bad feeling about the day.
they should've told him.
but they didn't and now it's their fault that he's gone.
gone.
he's not gonna be back.

the day of the funeral the reality doesn't sit in until aiden sees his face. beautiful brown eyes closed. face set peacefully. he looked peaceful.
aiden looks for his family. his mother stands next to the casket, a box of tissues in her husbands hand. her husband has a hand on her back and is rubbing circles.
his mom greets them with tears in her eyes and a little smile on her face.
few words she says, but they relate to aiden.
the funeral service doesn't end without tears. their soulmate's mother speaks.
and it's about aiden.
"my boy, his soulmate would draw him pictures on his arms. most times they were like, little designs, sometimes something cute.
"my boy died from a car accident. he had a bad feeling about it but he still got in the car and was driving to surprise his soulmate at work."
aiden lets the tears fall freely. taking the offered tissues from damien's dad, they cry. mr. miller takes an arm around aiden and allows them to cry on him.

and it isn't until the weekly visits at damien's grave does aiden really notice how empty they feel. even just telling him about their day while he's in the grave, doesn't feel right.
aiden cries every time they're there, expressing their wishes to damien. the ones where aiden and him could've had all their firsts together. the ones of meeting honey, and alex, and some of his friends too.
but. it's not able to happen.
and aiden hates it.
but they bring his favorite flowers every time. with a note, and something from damien's parents.
and aiden has never felt more empty in their life.
