I smiled at him and kissed him on the cheek gently.
"Thank you, BJ." I smiled.
I changed his diaper and walked into the kitchen where Sam was cutting up the contents of a lunchable for BJ to eat.
"Da!" BJ called as he saw Sam.
Sam turned to us and smiled at BJ.
"Hey, little man." Sam smiled
He walked across the room to us and took BJ from me, wrapping his other arm, not supporting BJ, around my waist and pulling me into a kiss. I closed my eyes as I kissed him back.
I felt a little head of hair and a tiny head push itself into our kiss against my cheek and Sam's.
I smiled against Sam's lips as we both opened our eyes, seeing BJ had put his head in to give a kiss of his own with ours.
We separated and both Sam and I laughed.
I kissed BJ on the cheek softly and Sam kissed me on the forehead as he held BJ and gently removed his hand from my back as I stepped away from them and waved to my two boys.
"Say bye to mommy, BJ." Sam said softly to BJ as he waved to me.
BJ put up a little hand and opened and closed his fingers in a wave of his own.
I smiled to myself and blew them both a kiss before walking out of the room and down to the garage, my bags already packed in the truck.
I got in the truck and backed out, leaving the bunker for my case.
I drove for a few hours until I got to Iowa and found a motel close by the abandoned hospital I was checking out. There had been a few people, some paranormal investigators and a few teens who dared to go inside, that came out with a whole new memory.
I settled in and looked over my files on my laptop for the place, it had a troubled past with a lot of deaths, this one could be tricky pin pointing what spirit was affecting people who went inside. I already had a pretty solid idea though, Edward Flynn, he was a mental patient in the late 1800's who was admitted to the hospital after the Edinburgh Manor in Scotch Grove was filled to capacity.
The guy had gone insane on the nurses in the hospital and knocked about five of them unconscious and killed two more single handedly. He was put into a medically induced coma after that and died when a doctor gave him too much medication. He fit the role of a vengeful spirit perfectly, but why he changed the memories of those who went inside was a mystery.
I changed into my skirt and blouse and visited the home of the family who's daughter lost her memory, the first of all the victims.
The door opened with an older woman, maybe in her middle to late forties. She was the girls mother.
"Hi, I'm agent Johnson, I came to ask a few questions about your daughter and what happened to her a few weeks ago. If that's okay." I said.
The woman nodded, letting me into her house. I stepped inside and followed her to the sitting room where I sat across from her.
"What do you want to know?" She asked, looking tired and fatigued, with a sad look in her eyes.
"Before it happened, was there anything strange going on with her? Was she complaining about seeing things like shadows or were the lights in your house going haywire?" I asked kindly.
She looked confused but shook her head, "No, she hadn't." She said.
"And was she acting strange before the accident?" I asked.
"No, she had a bad break up with her boyfriend since middle school and that got her down, but that's it." She said.
I nodded, "And I'm guessing that breakup was pretty hard on her." I said.
She nodded, "They had been together since sixth grade, he was a great boy and everyone thought they would just grow up to marry each other, but after they broke up she just wasn't the same, she was depressed and I think she was even a bit suicidal. " She explained.
"And that night she lost her memory, what did she do?" I asked.
"She was invited by some friends to go out for a movie, but they had to take her home early, saying they took a detour into that old hospital and she just forgot who they all were... " She paused, fighting tears as she sniffled.
"When she came home she didn't even recognize me, she kept saying she needed to go home and her parents would miss her... " She said, sobbing a little now through her tears.
I leaned forward in my chair and put a hand on her knee gently in comfort.
"I'm very sorry." I said softly. Empathy for her aching at my heart, if BJ forgot about me and Sam it would be devastating for us.
"And since then we've just had to lie to her, keep her in the house and tell her that we are her parents close friends and are watching over her while they are on vacation... How could she forget about her whole life? About her family?" She asked.
I stood and sat down next to her, putting an arm around her and holding her in a soft hug as she cried into my shoulder.
"I'm here to try and figure out what happened, and if I can I'm going to fix it, I promise." I said.
She nodded, "I hope there is something you can do, I don't know what I'll do without her." She cried.
I left and visited the other families, they all had a similar story, their family member who was a victim had a traumatic experience that made them depressed in some way and when they came out of the hospital they had a completely new memory, they had no recollection of anything that happened to them before and had an air tight story of their lives up to that point, none of them remembered what happened in the hospital though.
This spirit was very strong, stronger than almost any I'd encountered before, if he could completely alter the memory of his victims and make them believe nothing before what he created was real, then he was very powerful, and very dangerous. What I didn't get was why he was changing memory, they all seemed to be down in life before he changed it and when they came out their life seemed much, much better, he seemed to be doing a kind of service to them, but ruining their families lives at the same time.
I had to go in there and find this thing, he'd been cremated so there was no body to burn, unless I was wrong about who this spirit was, then I'd have to figure that out inside, but now the trick was stopping it ASAP, it couldn't take anyone else's memory, I wouldn't let it.
