"Every storm runs out of rain just like every dark night turns into day Every heartache will fade away just like every storm runs out of rain." The radio sang in the background. It was just another typical day in the attic. Me, my sister, and our dog.
"Clayton?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think we will ever have a normal life?" My sister asked as she went through the pictures of our parents before we were abandoned. "You know one where we have a real family? One where we aren't on the run from police or adoption agencies?" It was about 7:30 p.m. June and I had been running all day from lots of different people. We live in the attic of our old abandoned house, so we have to go out and get food and other things to survive.
"I don't know June. I don't know." I said and pulled her in close to me. Life for us has always been a bumpy road. When I was 8 and June was 3 we were abandoned by our parents at a local restaurant. Since then we have lived in hiding hoping maybe one day our parents would come back for us. It's been 8 years and they still haven't come back. June still thinks they will, but I know the true story. My sister was so young that she didn't quite understand what was going on and I only understood that my parents didn't want us so they left. In the years that followed, we kept in touch with the police when one day I got a call telling me the truth about my parents. They didn't abandon us, well, they sort of did. There were people who had taken them hostage, and they were told if they didn't go with them the people would kill my sister and I. I'm the only one to this day that knows, other than the police. I was told that I wasn't to tell my sister under any circumstances. They never did find the people responsible, and that's why the police wanted us so badly. So we wouldn't be hurt. June had dozed off, so I covered her with blankets and snuggled up next to her with Destiny our dog between us.
It was about 4:30 in the morning when I heard a crashing downstairs. Before I even had time to register what was happening I saw them. Dragging June out of the house kicking. Hands tied mouth duck taped shut. When I finally got control of myself I realized Destiny was growling at the attic door. I grabbed a bag and started putting everything in it. 4 blankets, 2 water bottles, bread, apples, canned soup, and the pictures my sister was looking at the night before. I grabbed Destiny's collar and put it on her, then her harness and leash. I waited an hour to make sure the coast was clear. I left and was on the run again. I pulled out my phone and called the nearest police station. The police had stopped looking for my parents 5 years ago because the trail of evidence they were following ran out and the case has been ice-cold ever since.
When I arrived at the police station they asked if I had evidence that this had actually happened. Lucky for me I keep a camera rolling at night in case anything were to happen. I also was able to get some pictures of the event. There was blood on the driveway because she had been kicking so much that she had scraped up her legs.
"Please officer. Is there anything you can do?" I pleaded hoping there was something he could do.
"Sorry, kid. I told you without knowing for sure if these are the people who took your parents..." He trailed off. "We can't assume." he sighed and shrugged his shoulders.
"What does that have to do with anything! Yes, I want to know who took my parents, but I want to know who took my sister too! I want them arrested!" I demand.
"Come back in two days and if she's still not back then we will start an investigation." He turned back to his computer and I left. If he wasn't gonna help I would just have to find someone else who would. With what little money I had I bought some more food. I knew I couldn't go back to the house they would be waiting for me. I had to find someplace else.
I stopped at a local hotel for the night. I barely slept, though. I couldn't stop thinking about my sister. Why would they take her? Wouldn't they want a boy? Someone who if they didn't kill me could work? There were reasons they would want a girl too, though I pushed that thought away quickly. I must have worried so much that I fell asleep because the next thing I knew I was being woken by Destiny jumping all over me.
