"Katniss honey, are you alright?" mum asked, looking at me with a concerned look. Could I answer truthfully? I don't think I could. "I'm fine just umm a bit tired." The last part was the truth. I was tired. "I'll be back soon," I said, quickly running over to give mum and Prim a hug and get through the front door before they asked where. I ran through the town, to the fence that was meant to keep people out, I think it was to keep us in. I ducked underneath it, and ran towards the meadow that Gale and I use to sit in.
When I got there I walked up to the Hollow tree, grabbed my bow and arrows and sat on the ground. Could I really hunt at a time like this? I knew the answer, yes. Yes I could. I stood up and walked through the trees, deeper into the forest. the first thing that caught my eyes was a small rabbit, it was better than nothing right? I pulled and arrow out and got it ready to shoot. slowly pulling my bow back, aiming at the rabbit, then I released my grip, the arrow shooting and very high speed towards the innocent animal. i walked up to the rabbit to pick it up. I smiled to myself, I knew what Gale would have said. "Straight in the eye, like always," he would have said, smiling. it hurt to think about what would have happened, and to think about the past. It all hurt. It felt like someone had taken an arrow and shot it at my, straight through my heart. I wouldn't mind if someone did right now, I think I would deserve it. There is still a chance, a small voice in the back of my head told me, still a chance he will make it. The voice was right. Then on the other hand there was another part in my mind saying, he won't come back, he's not coming back. That part I found more realistic. The only victor district 12 has had is Haymitch, That was 24 years ago. I looked at the rabbit I'm my hand, poor thing. It wasn't its fault my family was starving and now Gale was gone I had to support two families. I pulled the arrow from its eye and put it back in with the rest of my arrows. Maybe the rabbit couldn't survive, but Gale will, He has to.
I put the money in my pocket I was paid for the two rabbits and four birds. I walked home slowly, not worrying about the fact that it was raining and cold. I was almost home when my legs stopped. At first I wasn't sure why, but them i realised I was outside the Hawthorne's house. It's like my brain forgot how to move my legs and I was stuck. The front door opened and Rory, Gales twelve year old brother came out. "Katniss what are you doing out here in the rain?" he asked worriedly. "I, I don't know, I was walking and," I stopped all of a sudden. I think he knew what i was saying. "Come inside, Prim's here too," he said smiling. His smile reminded me so much of Gale. All I could do was nod once. Prim was here too, I would be fine, right? I took small, slow steps towards the door, Rory holding it open. He looked worried about me being in the rain. Maybe Gale asked him to watch me? Maybe Gale knew we I would be like this? I don't know, but it was sweet of Rory. It was nice to think someone still cared about me. Of course Prim and mum did, but it was still nice. "Did he ask you?" I knew I wouldn't have to say his name for Rory to understand. I was inside now, I took my hunting boots off at their front door. "Ask me what?" Rory answered, obviously confused. "To watch me or something," I replied. He looked me in the eyes and after a few seconds nodded. "Katniss, he loved you." That was it, I couldn't help what happened next, I burst into tears as soon as I heard that. "I know," I managed to say between sobs. Rory came up and hugged me. I could tell he was fighting tears himself. After a few minutes I was able to stop crying. I think Vick (Gales other brother), Posy (his sister), his mum, and Prim could hear us, but where giving me a little time to calm down. We sat down and when Rory was more confident that I was alright he asked, "how did you know?" I sighed trying not to remember the moment. "He told me," was all I said. He obviously wasn't concerned about when. "Did you love him?" he whispered, hoping not to make me sad again. I smiled weakly at him. "I think I did," I whispered back. I refused to cry again. We sat on the ground for a while longer then Prim walked in and sat next to me. She wiped a tear off my cheek and I smiled at her. "Oh Rory here," I said passing him one of the bags of money. "Give that to your mum, but here," I said passing him $3 from my own bag. "Katniss I don't ne-" he started before I cut him off. "You are having iit end if story." he smiled at me
"Thank you," he answered, knowing that I was as stubborn as his brother and there was no point arguing with me. "Lets go Prim, see ya Rory," I said smiling thankfully. I hadn't talked to anyone about it yet and it felt good to get it off my chest. Prim hugged Rory and whispered something in his ear I didn't quite catch, something was going on there. He smiled at her when she stepped back. They said goodbye and Prim and I left.
