"Wendy! Hurry up!" she heard him giggle. Wendy Darling got up from tying her shoe and darted after the two boys who ran ahead of her.
"I'm coming, Bren! Wait for me!" she called after the boys. Finally she caught up to them, and they ran as fast as they could to the little harbor. Their eyes grew large as they watched the huge ships began to take off and sail away.
"I'm gonna be a captain of a ship when I'm older," Brennen proudly declared, mesmerized by a large merchants ship loaded with precious artifacts.
"Yeah, sure you are. Just like I'm gonna fly." Brennen looked at Peter, shocked by his friend's bluntness. Peter's voice softened. "Look here, Bren. It's not as if I don't believe in you. You're my best friend. But only rich people have ships as glorious as these. Poor folk like us don't ever make it in that world."
Brennen looked down at his feet. His friend was right. But Wendy places her hand in his shoulder and smiled. "Maybe one day, Bren, in our dreams will we be rich and captains of a whole fleet of ships. I know this life may be difficult, but for now we will just have to imagine a better one."
"Wendy, don't tell him such things. It's not practical to imagine."
And that was Peter Pan for you. Practical and sensible, even at eight years old. But he was a true friend, nonetheless. You see, Peter, Brennen, and Wendy met on the first day of primary school, when they were five years of age. And they had practically been best friends ever since. And as far as they were concerned, nothing would ever change that.

Eight years later...

"Wendy, would you hurry?! You practically take an eternity!" Wendy rolled her eyes.
"I'm going as fast as I can, Brennen Alexander Jones! And I don't exactly fancy being awake at four in the morning, and I most certainly did not want to carry all the food, so don't you dare raise your voice at me!"
"Woah, did someone wake up on the wrong side of her bed this morning?" Peter chuckles as Brennen stared at Wendy in shock.
Wendy threw a pebble at Peter, who only laughed even harder. Peter and Wendy followed Brennen onto his new boat. Is was most definitely not a large ship, but rather a small one that Brennen had saved for almost four years to buy from his uncle.
As soon as they were on the boat, Brennan began getting ready to set sail. Peter, in a brief moment of concern, looked at Brennen and asked, "Are we sure this is safe?"
"Of course! I am after all the greatest captain to ever set sail!" He exclaimed, raising the harpoon in his hand for dramatic emphasis.
"Okay, Captain Hook. I trust you," Peter laughed.
But the three did not realize that their journey as friends would very soon be coming to an end.
