It was nice to finally have everyone at dinner. Grams, Mom, Dad, Austin, David, Mark, and myself were all enjoying tacos when Dad's old police scanner went off.
"Calling all units. We have a 10-45 at the Bluewing Stadium."
Mark, Austin, and David quickly got out of their seats and were heading towards the door.
"Wait for me!" I said, scooting my chair back as quickly as I could without knocking it over.
"Sorry Sky. But you need to stay here." David said before I even got fully out of my seat.
"But..."
"It is too dangerous for you, what if you got seriously hurt, or worse." Mark said to my objection.
"But..."
"There's no time to argue about this now, we are needed." Austin walked out the door and was followed by the others.
Gram picked up the boys' plates and put then on the counter next to the sink. And Mom helped her clean off the dinning table.
"Why can't I go with them?"
"They have been trained and have powers that can be used to protect themselves and others." Mom pointed out.
"But I've been trained too!" I argued. Mom looked at me with her intense stare, signaling that this argument was over. But is was nowhere near over. One day I was going to be out there. Helping my brothers fight.
Mom started to wash the dishes, and Dad turned on the TV to the local news station to watch the boys as they save the day once again.
Gram cleared her throat to catch my attention. It worked. I turned to see that she was motioning beside the basement door for me to follow. She took the lead down the steps and I followed close behind, ready to catch her if she started to fall.
At the bottom, Grams turned on the lights to reveal a nice set up for me to practice fighting, strategy, agility, leadership, and testing my ability.
"Grams, what is this?" I was shocked by all the different equipment that was able to fit in our tiny basement.
"You know exactly what this is." Grams was grinning. "Where are you going to begin?"
*************LATER THAT NIGHT*************
I can up the stairs when I heard my brothers return. They all looked a little dirty and had a few scratches on them, but nothing too serious.
"How was it?" I asked, hoping to get all the details.
"It was a bomb." Austin said plainly while eyeballing the blackberry pie that Grams just pulled out of the oven.
"Ten people were injured today at the Bluewing Stadium, but a lot more could have been hurt or worse if it wasn't for The Trio Boys." The news report for channel 7 reported on the TV.
"Only ten. Got to say I'm impressed boys." Dad said as he reached for the remote to turn off the TV. "Its not bad. Not bad at all."
Grams was slicing the pie at this point and Austin was watching and waiting for her to hand it out.
"Skylar!" Grams was calling from the kitchen. "Will you come and help me?"
"Coming." I slowly made my way to the kitchen trying to catch every detail of the event that Mark, David, and Austin told Dad as Mom was checking and cleaning their injuries. Grams knew how much I loved to listen to the boys tell of their heroics and any up and coming villains that we would need to keep an eye out for. It always made me feel like I was there with them instead of stuck here at home watching the news.
Once in the kitchen, Grams motion to the freezer so I grabbed the ice cream and put it on the counter. I then went to one of our drawers and grabbed the ice cream scoop and a handful of spoons. Grams dished a slice of pie on a plate and I put a scoop of ice cream on top and put a spoon on the side. We repeat this process until there is a plate for everyone.
"Come and get it!" Grams shouts so that everyone could hear. She then proceeds to put away the extra pie in the fridge. I follow and put away the ice cream. By the time I reach the freezer, Austin has already grabbed himself a plate and sat down at the table devouring the pie.
Soon everyone has a plate and is sitting down enjoying Gram's blackberry pie. I was no longer angry at the fact I wasn't able to join the heroics today, I was just happy that we were all together enjoying Gram's pie. But I had this feeling deep down inside of me that this may just be the last time this will happen.
