I'm 5 years old and it's my first day of kindergarten at a new school.
"Are you sure you'll be fine honey?" My mom asks. I nodded and flashed my first fake smile. "Yes mom, it's just school." I closed the car door and walked into the school.
Most of the kids are playing on the playground equipment. It's understandable since school starts in about 15 minutes.
"Some of these kids look like rats." I laughed to myself.
There were few kids my age. Everyone seemed to be in 2nd grade or above.
Whatever. Why should I care? It's not like I'll be hanging out with these losers anytime soon.
"Hey you watch out!"
"Huh?" I turned around and a ball slapped against my face. My cheek stung and I collapsed to the ground.
I breathed in sharply and held my cheek. When I was able to see again a tall boy with brown hair stood over me.
"Oh look fresh meat." He smirked. "Sorry about the ball buddy."
He reached his hand out and I flinched.
"What a baby!" He cackled. The boy picked me up by the collar of my blue hoodie.
With sudden confidence I chuckled. "You don't have to pretend you're so tough when we all know you've got a little dick."
Steam was practically spewing from his ears after I said that. He raised his fist and I tightened my eyes, bracing myself for the punch.
"Leave him alone San!"
The playground got quiet and everyone looked to where the voice came from, even me. My eyes landed on a boy with a bowl cut. In his hands was an apple.
The boy (who apparently is named San) looked at Apple Boy then back at me. He threw me to the ground and my nose hit the concrete. I felt an iron taste in my mouth.
Ha, wonder what it could be.
San approached Apple Boy and looked him straight in the eye. "You should learn to keep your stupid mouth shut Jongho. Or do you want me to beat your ass up as well?"
Apple Boy got closer. "Watch what you're saying San. Do you want me to shove a utility pole down your throat? Or gouge out your eyeballs and suck the fluid out of them?!"
He raised his apple and cracked it in half with his bare hands. I've got to admit even I was impressed. I'm rarely impressed.
Apple Boy then threw the apple at San. "That'll be your stupid head if you keep messing with the innocent!"
San threw the apple to the floor and mumbled a few not so nice words under his breath. He walked away a bit fast and everyone went back to what they were doing.
I wiped my mouth with my sleeve and picked up my backpack. Can't believe I haven't even been here at least an hour and I've already got an enemy!
Maybe it's better if I sit somewhere else. There's a metal rail fence surrounding the entire playground. I'll sit at the very far edge.
And so I walked over. Well more like limped. My knees are a bit sore from hitting the ground so hard. When I got there I finally sat down. I reached into my backpack and pulled out a sketch book.
"I should really finish my spiderman drawing.." I thought out loud and flipped to the page.
"What spiderman drawing?"
SHOOT
I flinched at the voice and looked up.
Apple Boy.
He smiled at me and I couldn't help but smile back.
What? His dimples and bunny teeth are irresistible.
Apple Boy sat down next to me. "You're new here right?"
I nodded and rolled my pencil between my fingers, a bit too shy to draw.
He took a bite of his half cracked apple from earlier. I watched him as he did.
"That guy who was about to beat you to a pulp is Choi San. He's pretty nice but overconfident."
I nodded again and finally put my pencil to paper and began forming spiderman's body. Apple Boy and I stayed quiet for a few minutes. He sat there, eating his apple and I drew.
Awkward? I would say so.
"DC is better."
I looked at him and made a confused sound. "Huh?"
He took a bite. "Flash and Superman are way better."
"Nuh uh! Spiderman is cooler! A-and Iron Man could defeat DC heroes any day!" I stuttered quietly and put my sketchbook down, crossing my arms.
Sis better prepare because I'm about to bite.
Apple Boy giggled. "You look cute when you're mad."
"W-what..?"
He giggled again and reached out his hand. "I'm Choi Jongho."
I looked at his hand. "What are you doing?"
"Um I want to shake your hand."
"Why?"
He put his hand down and I grabbed it. Jongho looked at me with wide eyes, looking down at his hand and then at me.
Jongho acts so weird. Didn't he want to hold my hand? Weirdo.
He pulled his hand away slowly. "Shake not hold."
"You could've just said so dummy."
Jongho stuck his tongue out at me. "I just wanna know your name."
I couldn't help but grin. This apple breaking bunny wants to know my name? He'll have to work for it. I don't just tell anyone my name.
"I'm Kang Yeosang."
So much for not telling just anyone..
He giggled. "I'm gonna call you Spiderman."
I opened my mouth in shock. Spiderman?!
"Well I-im gonna call you Apple Boy!"
Jongho ruffled my hair and I slapped his hand away playfully.
"Well Kang Yeosang." He stood as the school bell rang. All the kids lumbered inside, "excited" for a glorious new school day. "I'll see you again for recess. And maybe later at my house if you'd like. I've got a ton of new action figures." He hopped a bit.
I stood as well. "I'd like that."
"Its a date." He winked playfully and walked away.
"D-date?"
"Bye Spiderman!"
He ran into the school, his backpack bouncing along. I stumbled into the school, still confused about the so called "date".
And what are all these heart flutters I feel?
"Aw Yeosang O🅱️🅱️AR you're in love!!!11!1!" I can already hear you say.
I didn't know I was in love and I thought the heart flutters were all I would feel.
I dont think I was I ever more wrong
