The concept of the void has been one in existence since the dawn of ancient religion, and even still, had only really seen the peak of its popularity in the works nearing the creations of famous Author and Poet, H.P. Lovecraft. His works established...

Tales involving the void usually start as a normal day, or whatever may be normal for that universe. Wars wage as they always have, people act as they always do. But beneath this illusion of the mundane, dark powers are scheming.
Noteworthy: It is displayed constantly that the void is coexistent or coterminous with other planes at some point or place. Sometimes, in our reality, it can be a portal deep down in some cave. Other times, it has spaces all over that are so small they just barely slip right from under our noses. The pencil that seemed to have vanished from your desk, or that one favorite shirt that you can't find anymore could be examples of the void subtly changing the reality around us.
People may begin to act slightly out of their nature, but not yet to the point that it is obvious that something is going on. In several cases, the void itself is a sentient plane. In others, there are powerful creatures within which control it. Either way, the void/creatures of the void have displayed a unique disdain for reality, and seek to cause it overall "harm" in some way.
This can be through literal death and destruction, altering of reality, or it could be through devouring the material plane entirely and setting it adrift in the endlessness that is the void. Both would be harmful to the denizens of reality, of course.
Noteworthy: In each major depiction, the void exists outside of time and space. It is a pre-primordial force, meaning that it existed before primordial things did, as it represents an overarching concept of "nothingness". The reasoning behind the void's aggression is usually that it is attempting to return things back to their original home, as all things came from nothingness at some point, it views itself as the father of all things in creation or concept. As such, it is able to modify reality in places where The Void has influence before ultimately devouring it.
