Well, in order to read this with ease you must have seen both The Lord of the ring and The Hobbit trilogy (I guess everyone saw these ones a thousand time and more xD)
Then, it would be very useful if you read The Silmarillion since many names from it will pop up and it is pretty much part of the story :)
If you don't have the time may be just having a mental map about the important events that occurred during the Tree Years and both First and Second Age (mostly first)
Like: - the valars
-main wars (Dagor Bragollach, Nirnaeth Arnoediad, War between the Valar and Morgoth, duel Fingolfin x Morgoth & Dagorlad battle mainly)
-The Noldor genealogy (mostly fingolfin..)
-Creation of the Silmarils
And you can also read The Lord of the ring and The Hobbit but it is not necessary !
