"Maybe I was destined to forever fall in love with people I couldn't have. Maybe there's a whole assortment of impossible people waiting for me to find them. Waiting to make me feel the same impossibility over and over again." ― Carol Rifka Brunt
Ella Jameson was content with life she had a loving family and had the perfect boyfriend, Aaron Knight. He loved her unconditionally and made her feel no less than a princess. Aaron was the boy next door, he was her childhood sweetheart.
For the summer Ella had gone abroad and unfortunately Aaron couldn't join her but he had promised to keep in touch: call every day, Skype and text.
However, during the first week of the holiday Ella called Aaron repeatedly. He not once answered. Sometimes she thought it might just be the network connection that's faulty. Throughout the week she started growing extremely concerned and couldn't focus on what was meant to be a 'fun and relaxing holiday'. She had a gut feeling that something was wrong and just wanted the vacation to be over, constantly she tried contacting Aaron's family but no one picked up the call or it just went straight to voicemail.
Cameron and Laura, her two best friends that went with her on holiday also believed something was wrong. After 2 dreadful weeks of constantly feel nervous and impatient the day had come that she returned home. Finally! She was excited to see Aaron and had several questions in mind but right now all she wanted was to be in his arms.
As the car ride came to a stop she immediately jumped out and rushed towards his house she bent down to pick up the hidden key that was concealed with a flowerpot, however there was nothing there.
Curiosity had got the best of her; she climber through one of the house windows believing there may be a reason there that will clear her uncertainty but when she entered the house she saw the unexpected. Glancing around her was left baffled. Gone, it was all gone, everything had vanished. It was as if no one had ever resided there.
Walking further into the house, flashbacks and images race through her mind. She could sense something was wrong. Where did everything go? Where is he? She began ascending her way up the stairs, with each step taken tears began to make their journey down her face as she remembered the sweet memory of when she was five and Aaron had chased her down the stairs. For a minute he was back again as laughter filled the air and all she could see was those beautiful blue eyes that you could get lost in. The sudden echo of a booming sound causes her to slip out of her trance only to realise he's not there.
Instantly Ella ran towards his room, she reaches the door, her fingers weakly wrap around the door knob as she turns it. As soon as the door opened she took in the sight before her. A gasp escapes her lips. His room was empty and bare except for one big cardboard box that lay in the middle of the room. Taking a few steps at a time she approaches i, gently kneeling down Ella opens the box causing her mouth to suddenly become dry, her breath hitches, a lump forms at her throat, she remains speechless as a single tear slides down her face.
Pictures, so many pictures, letters, toys, gifts, cards, everything she ever gave him lay in that box but under it all lay a crimson coloured box. Slowly reaching out for it, she holds it in her grasp and carefully removes the lid. There in soft velvet lay a piece of silver jewellery that meant ever so much to her. Closing her eyes she reminisces back to the day he had given her the gift, the flashback begins "Happy Birthday!"Aaron says after gently placing something cold around my neck as he removed the material concealing my eyes. Eagerly I open my eyes to see a beautiful silver necklace hanging on my neck, half a heart with a red gem on one side. It was stunning and its simplicity held so much elegance. I was amazed by its beauty and couldn't stop admiring it. Aaron's voice had pulled me out of my thoughts, "Do you like it? Oh you don't do you? Ugh I'm sorry I really thought you..." I stop his rambling by gently pressing my lips to his. "I love it, thank you so much." I say looking into his eyes. He places his hand in his pocket and brings something out as I stare at him in confusion I then realise what it is "It's the other piece of the heart" he lightly pick the chain on my neck and connects it to his "You see you have a piece of my heart and i have a piece of yours, together we're complete".He then turned the heart around and there in carved fancy writing it said 'I promise to love you, forever'.
The sound of thunder awakes me from my daze, and that's when everything sets in. His gone, he left, and reality hits me hard. He not only left me but left my heart shattered in a thousand pieces. I felt broken. Tears blur my vision as I close my eyes and let go of the breath I didn't even know I was holding. There's this unbearable ache, this throb in my heart, an indescribable pain. Questions upon questions swirl through my head and all I find asking myself is 'why?'
As I get up to leave the small heart key ring falls out my hand I bend down to pick it up and attach to mine. Taking small steps out of his room i slowly made my way down the stairs. All the memories I had with this house replay in my head. Every inch and every corner of this house I have memories with. I soak in everything one last time before I leave. I couldn't go home, not right now everyone would ask questions which i had no answers to. I didn't know how i would go to my own room. His jumper, his pictures, everything was there it would only just serve as a reminder of him and what we had, I couldn't bear the pain of seeing it all right now so I decided to walk through the park for my own peace of mind.
I make my way through the trees, my grandfather had once told me that trees show us how lovely it is to let things go, the way a leaf falls and new ones grow the same way in life when one thing comes to an end, new beginning start. I find myself sitting near the lake. From the corner of my eye I can see the small 'Bestfriendsforever' engraving both Aaron I had once made on a tree. I'm taken back 10 years as I remember the first time we came here. "This can be our secret spot" Aaron had told me. He had also told me he would love me forever, but he left without a single word. Now I'm here alone, heartbroken. I close my eyes and try to erase every memory, every little detail of him from my brain and most importantly my heart.
She never knew falling in love could hurt so much, but she learnt that to fall in love once was enough to know how much it hurt; she vowed to never fall again.
