Chapter 4 - Perfume

Jaehyun straightened, watching the vampire's wet eyes in front of him.

"I know you can live indefinitely, that you don't have to sleep or very little. I know you are both dead and alive. That's why your skin is so gray and pale. I know that you feed on the blood of humans, that you make sure not to kill or transform them. I know you have psychic powers, that your strength is more important than it seems."

Jaehyun paused, seeing Taeyong's eyes still wet.

"I know you decimated the lycans during the old war, that we almost disappeared because of you."

Taeyong swallowed before taking the pen from Jaehyun's hands.

"We feed on human blood donations," Taeyong corrected him, "No vampire has been allowed to bite for more than a hundred and fifty years now."

"As if you adhere to this law" Jaehyun whispered to make humor.

"I've never bit anyone" said Taeyong. "Only animals to try. Don't make fun of us, this law is very important. We are no longer monsters since that day."

"Never ?" Jaehyun whispered, smiling. "Not even tempted to try?"

Taeyong pursed his lips, lifting his pen from the paper.

"I ... I have never seen any human. So yeah, I don't see how I could've bit one."

Jaehyun's eyes widened.

"N-never? But? How it is possible? They are everywhere !"

Taeyong sighed.

"If you think it was fun to stay cloistered. I was too young to go out, I could have become uncontrollable."

Jaehyun held his tongue. He felt that the subject was once again sensitive. He could not believe it, how could a vampire stay shut up for so long?

"Well of course you, you had all the pleasure of running around the cities and forests, killing and devouring everything you liked," Taeyong growled. "We made the choice to withdraw, we do not want to kill anymore. Neither transform."

Jaehyun smiled.

"I couldn't do what I wanted you know. My father didn't want me to leave our territory before I became a strong Alpha. And I never hunted a lot. The pack did it for us. Humans are spared as long as they let us live in peace. But ... to come back to you, I still don't understand how you can learn to control yourself if you don't confront the outside and its temptations ..."

Taeyong tensed at the word Alpha coming out of Jaehyun's mouth. He had read a lot about castes and throughout his life he had been told terrible stories about these dominant wolves. They were generally more powerful, more cruel and barbaric. Alpha males could kill their siblings and their sons if they represented a threat.

"Don't worry, I never wanted to be Alpha," Jaehyun said. "All these laws on the hierarchy are stupid ... That's why our generation will change things. You should do the same thing. Locking up children from the rest of the world is not a good thing. Do you want that for your descendants seriously ?"

Taeyong swallowed. He had never thought of ever fathering. His family simply did not educate him for this purpose.

"I won't have descendants" said Taeyong. "I-"

He stopped for a moment. He had never spoken to anyone about this before that day.

Jaehyun opened an amused eye as he saw the vampire look terribly serious and stressed.

"No descendants? Do you really intend to let your specie disappear?"

The rain was falling more and more heavily on the stained glass windows that made pupils look up.
