REAL LIFE

"Josh, where is Lemon's leash?" Max wandered around the small living room, looking all over for the long blue piece of cloth. Her mother sat on the couch, watching Stranger Things for the tenth time in the past month. Introducing her to a show that reminded her so much of her childhood was an awful idea. She never moved from the couch, not even to cook or work.

"I dunno, Mad Max. You try your room?" He finished up his morning routine like he always did by kissing his wife's cheek over the couch, only to be ignored. He handed Maxine all three brown paper bags from his hands and leaned over to look under the small square dinner table.

The apartment was just about as cramped as you could get. It was a two-bed, one-bath and the kitchen and living room were both even smaller than the tiny bedrooms. The kids each had a sheet-less twin sized mattress to sleep on, though sometimes the floor felt better- the only reason they didn't sleep on the floor was the fact that the white carpet was no longer white. Instead, it was a dirt brown and had stains from what seemed like decades ago. Their mattresses were all that could fit in the bedroom. Anytime someone took a step from the hallway into the room, they'd sink into Stephen's thin bed. He insisted on having his be the one in front of the door because he was a light sleeper and could protect them if anyone broke through their thin, wooden front door.

"Found it!" Joshua Martin laughed, pulling the leash out from under the table and latching it onto the collar that was clipped tight- almost too tight- around the golden retriever's neck. "You guys have to walk, with what Stephen did to the car and all. I gotta make sure your mom has everything she needs for the day. Will you be home for dinner?" He pulled his sleeves half way up his thin arms before crossing them.

"Uh probably not. Dakota and I were gonna film some stuff after school and then we all took off work to celebrate mine and Kota's birthdays." The girl nodded, smiling without showing her teeth. He was never really the best at remembering things like birthdays. With always having to remember what Sally needed daily, like the remote, cigarettes, and a constant stream of her favorite Netflix show.

"Oh shit. I'm so sorry. You know how it gets. Yours is today?"

"Yesterday, actually." She chuckled awkwardly and adjusted the string bag on her back, tugging on the leash she now held in her hands. "But it's okay, Joshua, really. I don't like my birthday much anyway." Max had quite the index of bad birthday experiences. If you think of any possible bad things to happen on someone's birthday, it's probably happened to her. To list a few, her father walked out when she was two and she left her home town and everything she knew in Astoria, Oregon when she was ten.

"Sorry, Maxine. I'll get you something when we get the money from Stephen and Dakota's mother." He grabbed her head with his right hand and pulled her head to his chest.

"No, it's okay. Just pay me back for this month's Stranger Things bill and we're good." She laughed before prying herself from his embrace. She called for her siblings before walking out the door and toward Shermer High School.
