The Ancient Ones

Prologue: The Beginning

As the sun set on the rocky horizon, I thought about how pretty my desert state is. Hot as balls, but pretty nonetheless. I look down at a beautiful black, white furball and, as I stare into those pale blue eyes of hers I ponder if there truly is anything going on in there. Service dog or not this husky had her moments.

My thoughts were quickly interrupted by the very last person I wanted to see.

"Riku Akashi!", I rolled my eyes, I knew that voice anywhere. Putting on a fake friendly smile, I turn to a face I hate, "Jennifer Chavez, it's been too long since I've seen you, it's been what" I look at my watch sarcastically, "oh 5 minutes?"

Duchess sits at my feet, separating me from Jennifer, and also reminding me that it is still, in fact, illegal to kill someone.

"Haha very funny, listen, about the project due tomorrow..."

I groan, "you didn't even start your part of it, did you? I gave you the powerpoint to do, that's it! You didn't even have to research anything you just had to transfer the information I found."

Jennifer looks at me defensively, "hey! I didn't have the time between cheerleading and helping the football team."

"Maybe if you spent less time painting your face, and more time on your academics, then you wouldn't be in danger of being kicked off the cheerleading team," I say snidely.

She glares at me, "well if you didn't... if you weren't so..."

"Whatever, I'll finish it just don't expect me to put your name on a project you didn't put an effort to participate in" I snap my fingers telling Duchess that we're leaving, I walk about three feet before I hear muffled crying. 'Shit' I think before I turn to see black makeup falling down her face.

"I can't believe you would do something like this! If I get an F...*hic*... I'll get kicked off the team...*hic*... it will ruin me" she yelled at me sobbing.

I start to panic, not knowing what to do with anyone who cries, let alone Jen, that girl is more of a mystery than area 13.

Duchess licks my hand sensing my panic, I breath in and try to remain as calm as possible.

I pinch the bridge of my nose, " I don't have sympathy for someone who doesn't put any effort forward... *sigh* what are you doing right now?"

"N-nothing" she wipes her face with the sleeve of her sweatshirt.

"Come with me we'll finish it at my house."

"I have a boyfriend."

"Congratulations, do you want an A or not?"

We walk down cactus all the way to my street, Duchess trotting along like the world was perfect. I mean, I wasn't pleased that I had to spend my Thursday evening with Jennifer Chavez but, there wasn't much I could do. The conversation that we had played back in my head as we walked. I felt guilty about how I treated her, no matter how annoying she is.

"Sorry," I say looking down

"It's fine Riku, my dad is way worse he alway..."

I cut her off before she could finish, "hey hey hey, I was apologizing for being an ass that wasn't an invitation to tell me your life story."

"Oh sorry, I just thought..."

"No I don't care how your father treated you, I'm just trying not to fail science okay?"

I realize I'm an asshole, but I wouldn't have to be if people had more brain mass.

As we continued to walk I heard the screech of tires behind us. I turn around to see 2 cars coming at us full speed. In a panic, I kick Duchess out of the way and I pull Jennifer to my chest doing my best to pull us out of the way. I heard Jennifer scream and felt a sharp pain in my neck. 

When I opened my eyes, all I could see was white as my eyes adjusted. I moved my legs and arms but, the strange thing was, I didn't feel the pain I should have.

"Riku, are you alright?" Jennifer asked.

"Yeah, I'm good... are you okay? Are you hurt in any way?" she looks at me confused, only then did I really see our surroundings. I jolt up before she could answer me to see where we were.

"Riku, what's wrong?" she gaped at the sight.

We weren't in Arizona anymore that's for sure, we were in a cave, beyond that was a beautiful pasture with mint green grass and trees that swayed in the distance. The sun was shining so bright that it reflected off the grass. I walked towards it out of curiosity.

Just as I was about to put my foot out, I felt arms wrap around me to pull me back. Duchess, started to bite at the stranger holding me.

"H-hey, let go of me!" I tried to loosen their grip on me.

"Stop! I'm trying to save your life asshole, Now get your stupid dog off me" the female shouting from behind confused me.

"D-Duchess, Duchess," I said in an assertive tone "knock it off let her go" grabbing her collar I pulled her back.

As I pull my growling dog to me, I look up at the woman, I wasn't able to see her face fully all I could see was her sapphire blue eyes.

"Who are you and why are you here?" before I could answer I heard another female shouting.

"Put me down before I... before my friend kicks your ass!" I rolled my eyes.

"Jennifer please don't make the skilled people mad, I don't wanna die today because of your stupidity"

"Hey you're supposed to be protecting me, you know as my knight in shining armor!" She yells at me seemly irritated.

"Jennifer I am a scrawny kid from Arizona, I can do nothing for you!"

"Enough!" The girl with sapphire eyes cut us off

"Who are you and why are you here?" She seemed frustrated. "My name is Riku Akashi, and this is my Acquaintance Jennifer Chavez" she looks me up and down, carefully considering her words.

"How did you get here?"

Jen spoke up " we don't even know where here is"

She looked shocked, "you're in Avalon"

I looked at her confused, "Avalon? As in Avalon the land of apples? The final resting place of King Arthur?"

"No! We do not home apples here!" She said offended at my words.

I put my hand up in defense, "hey lady this is what I learned in my realm"

"What realm are you from?" the man with the muscles spoke up.

"Earth!" Jen said matter of factly

"No dumbass that's the planet we're from" I look at the man who's facial expression hadn't changed.

"We're from Arizona" I finally told them

He gasped, "the realm of the sun, that realm has been deemed uninhabitable by our people for many generations! How can you live there and not be melted by the unbearable heat?"

I smirked, "listen, muscle dude, I don't disagree with that statement, although, I hate to burst your bubble, but there's an entire civilization in Arizona... surprisingly. "

The sapphire eyed girl sighed, "Midgard"

The name surprised me, "Midgard?"

"Yes, that is the name of your realm"

Jennifer spoke up, "well we've told you who we are now it only seems fair that you tell us who you are."

The muscle guy looks at the one with sapphire eyes almost as to get confirmation, she didn't flinch she just looks up at me.

"My name is Eris Mayheart and this is Ajax Mayheart"

"Hello my tiny Midgard friends"

"The real question" Eris stated, "is how you got here"
