Jace laughed loudly, entertained by the curtain of sand that now coated Clary like a second skin.

He leaned over, brushing it from her hair and shoulders as he still laughed.

Once Clary composed herself, Jace took the penny from her once again and this time, placed it delicately into her hand- repeating his question.

Clary panicked as she stared at his face, her mind suddenly going blank. "Um..." She stuttered, scanning her mind thoroughly.

The only prominent thought she wanted to say was... Do you remember me? But she knew she would be disappointed by the answer.

Yet as she stared at his face, at those eyes she couldn't help but feel her body relax, and feel completely confident in her question.

She took a deep breath, not breaking eye contact with him as she toyed with the penny.

"Do you rem-"

"Hey guys! We finally made it. Really picked a secluded area here didn't you? Almost gave up searching a few minutes ago." Isabelle stated as Alec and herself appeared before them.

She dropped the bags of snacks in the sand, pulling out a pair of new sunglasses she'd bought.

She set to work ripping off the sticker as Alec sat down in the sand.

Jace moved to sit next to him, glancing at Clary as he did so. "So- what did you get up to while we were gone?" Isabelle inquired, glancing at Clary nonchalantly.

"Not much... played 'penny for your thoughts,' I think it's called?" She responded, watching as Jace nodded in confirmation.

"Oh, cool. Alec and I bought some snacks, drinks and one towel to share... although it's quite small..." Isabelle bit her lip as she looked at the bag, then back at the group.

"Thanks, Izzy. I'll pay you back-" Clary started but Isabelle cut her off straight away.

"Nonsense! This is my holiday, let me splurge all I want for my family and friends!" She smiled, before pulling out a bottle of sunscreen.

"Can someone get my back?"

"- and that's why Jace never goes near ponds anymore!" Isabelle laughed, howling at the look of betrayal on Jace's face.

Clary made herself laugh, even though she was there at the time where the 'vicious' duck latched onto Jace.

She had been at the park with Jace's family, it must've been his birthday.

They were really young- maybe had just met and had only gone out on a few dates before that incident.

Jace had to watch his younger cousin Max as the boy had wanted to look at the ducks for a while.

Clary had been talking to Maryse Lightwood, yet still kept an eye on her boyfriend.
Clary knew Jace wasn't close with his aunt, yet still adored Max with all his heart.

Maryse had just been starting to talk about how her two other children couldn't make it that day when suddenly an angry duck stampeded towards Jace.

The duck started viciously pecking at Jace's ankles, nearly drawing blood.

Clary couldn't help but laugh, watching as the duck all but ignored the younger boy and went directly for Jace.
