Morning light spilled in through the castle windows. White curtains ruffled slightly from the sea breeze outside, the sound of guls filling the air. The room was coloured a soft pink, with ornate gold trimmings around the ceiling. A large bed was placed in the middle of the wall across the window, large fluffy blankets and massive pillows donned it. A walk in closet and private bathrooms were attached by a small hallway.

In the bed, a figure stirred. A girl with long blond hair and delicate features sat up and stretched. She rubbed her light blue eyes and gazed at the room around her. Carefully, she stepped out of her bed, her feet touching the cold hardwood floor. Carefully, she made her way to the closet.

Hmmm, dress or t-shirt and jeans? She thought. Shirt and jeans are much more practical. She sighed as she pulled on a light pink shirt and dark blue jeans. Walking to her bedroom door she strapped a belt into place on her hip.

She began to walk down the castles large corridors. The halls were decorated with old portraits of the past kings and queens, old relatives long since passed. As she neared the end of the hall, she passed a large mirror. She rolled her eyes at it. It was meant to be symbolic, a fake portrait for the royals to pass so that they would know what it would be like to one day have a portrait on the wall. Too bad the mirror just looked out of place.

She stopped outside a large pair of oak doors. Adjusting her hair, she pushed the doors open. The room on the other side was large. One wall was completely glass, overlooking the ocean and off the edge of the high cliff the castle was seated on. To her right was a small library. Mountains of books stacked high, swaying slightly as if about to fall. That really does seem like a hazard, perhaps we should clean up there latter, the princess thought to herself. The other wall was completely cork board, covered in masses of papers and string connecting them. There a tall man named Felix was muttering over a stack of papers.

Felix was a native to the island. Felix had dark tan skin and jet black hair that was nicely combed. Surprisingly though, he had bright green eyes. A black pair of glasses sat on his nose. He had a very square jaw and a splash of freckles decorated his face. A faint scar traced down from his left eye to the bottom of his jaw, one of his many battle decorations. He wore a dark blue battle uniform with golden buttons. The princess could hear the light tap of his wooden leg as he tapped his foot against the floor deep in thought.

"Good morning, Felix!" the princess shouted as she ran towards the man. She jumped onto him and gave him a massive hug.

"Ah! Good morning, Princess Ava! You are up quite early!" Felix said surprised. He hugged her back but then turned back to his paper and cork board.

"Couldn't sleep in on my first day of being part of the guard!" Princess Ava shouted with excitement. She danced over to the large window and gazed out over the seas. "Can you imagine? I'll finally be able to make a difference here. When my parents gave me this colony I wasn't sure if I could handle it. It's a big island after all. But now? I feel ready to take on whatever pirates or monsters it has to throw at us!"

Felix merely smile and nodded. He stirred slightly at the name of pirates, wandering over to the window as well to look out. He stared out over the open seas. The princess could have sworn there was a hint of sadness in his eyes. Of course there would. She thought to herself. When we first met Felix he was a drunken captain of a trading ship.

"Do you think that we'll be able to fight anyone today? I've been training for months and would hate for my expertise to go unused." Ava said. She wandered over to her desk against the wall. Unlike Felix's, it was decorated with pink flowers, unicorns, and little glowing stars. She slumped down in her chair. "I really hope I get to kick some butt."

Still staring out the window, Felix replied, "I don't know. Things have been rather calm lately. The pirates haven't even so much as pillaged a home in weeks."

"You mean the Pirate Queen?" Felix stiffened, his eyes growing cold.

"No. She is not the queen of anything. She must run a kingdom if she wants to be the queen. All she has is a bunch of smelly, meat headed buffoons running around to do her bidding." He said through grit teeth. "As I was saying before however, the warning system hasn't even gone off. Not a single village has even reported seeing them!"

The princess groaned. "Than I guess we'll just have to wait until they do show." She spun back around in her chair. Taking out a pen and paper from her desk, she began to doodle

----- A few hours later -----

"Ugh, Felix!!! Nothings happening!" The princess was on her back on the desk. Feet sticking up in the air as she looked at her friend from across the room upside down. He was nose deep in a book, his hair slightly unkempt.

Glancing up he snorted. "Didn't they teach you patience back on the mainland?" The princess turned bright red.

"Oh yeah? Well, didn't they teach you... uh... that it's rude to speak to your princess and future queen like that?" She stuck out her tongue. Felix's humor disappeared.

"The only ruler this island ever had was the late Pirate King and his daughter the Pirate Queen. I use the term ruler loosely because they did not care for what happened to those on the island. It was a very cruel time."

Princess Ava looked away. Crap! I always forget that Felix grew up here. He's just so well put together! She started to count the wood beams in the ceiling. Suddenly, a short man burst into the room, sending the doors flying open. He wore a bright red uniform with brass buttons, signaling his rank was that below Felix. His face matched his outfit in the part where it too was bright red. Sweat dripped off of his forehead. It looks like he ran a marathon. The princess thought to herself.

"Your Majesty! The signal in the west has gone off! One of the villages there is in trouble! We are under the suspicion it is pirates!" He gasped out. He probably did run a marathon. The princess leapt up and pumped her fist in the air.

"YES!!!" She shouted excitedly. The messenger gave her a quizzical look. "I mean that is terrible news. I will personally be going out to handle the pirates. Felix shall accompany me as well as a few of the other guards."

The messenger nodded. "As you wish your majesty." He bowed and then left the room. Ava could barely contain her excitement. She jumped up and down, clapping her hands. Felix sighed and strapped on his sword belt, motioning for the princess to do the same. The princess composed herself and then followed Felix to the stables. This was going to be great!
