Why are they ignoring me? What did I do? Those were the things I was thinking about when everything began. It was the week of February 11th of 2019, I arrived at school and went to the spot where my friends and I usually met up in the morning. I was waiting for them and I thought that I would wait a while considering that they never come early. I was waiting for about 5 minutes when Beth showed up. Beth and I were never really close, she was a friend to me, but she was closer to my other friends, Jenny, Darla and Karissa. Beth and I would usually just talk about school and homework. I said hello to Beth but she ignored me, I thought she just didn't hear me so I didn't think too much of it. A little while after Beth arrived, Karissa came. I had also said hi to Kaissa but she ignored me as well. Jenny and Darla soon came after that and I tried to make conversation with them as well, only Darla was willing to talk to me, but when she did, the others glared at her. That's when I knew something was wrong.
I continued the day not knowing why they were acting the way they were and only talking to Claire, another friend of mine. I talked to Claire somewhat before, but we weren't as close as I was to Jenny, Karissa and Darla. Us four was an unbreakable force, or at least, I thought we were. After first period, I went to PE, my second period. On the way there, I was talking about the problem to Claire, she said that I should go talk to them. I took Claire's advice and tried to make conversation, they did nothing but ignore me. Darla has at least tried to talk to me, but she wouldn't tell me what they were ignoring me for. PE wasn't that fun since Claire was in an overload class and not in mine. In the class we had to choose teams, and that was something I dreaded. When Mrs. Jones was explaining the rules and the activity we were doing for that day. I heard the conversation that was shared between Beth, Darla and Karissa.
"Alright, so you will get yourselves in groups of four," Mrs. Jones said
"So we have a group of four here." Beth said to Karissa motioning to Darla, herself, Karissa and another girl in our class, Sally.
"What about Anna?" Darla asked
Beth answered carelessly, "What about her?"
I had eaten lunch with Claire in Mrs. Gutierrez's classroom. I had 5th period being a T.A. with Darla, she didn't really talk much. I went home feeling exhausted from school and then went to do my homework. I kept expecting a friend to text me or call me rescuing me from homework, but no one did.
The rest of the week pretty much went by with my friends ignoring me. On Friday February 15, 2019, I was at a dentist appointment when I got a text from Beth. Beth had explained why they were ignoring me and why she was mad at me.
Beth texted me, "hey Anna, so you asked me a couple of days ago if I was mad at you, and by now, I think you know the answer to that. For the past couple of days, we've been ignoring and trying to avoid you. You have treated my friends horribly and I believe you know that as well. I hope you find new friends and treat them better than how you treated these friends, but I no longer want to be your friend." After Beth has sent the text, Darla, Karissa, and Jenny also sent texts saying how they want to end the friendship. I was devastated and mad at myself for letting this happen. I had truly thought I did something wrong that made great friends like that hate me.
What I was looking forward to least was going to school on Monday and not having them as my best friends. On Monday, I went to my other friends in the morning and the day went pretty smoothly. I ate lunch with Claire and another friend, and although it did sadden me to see my last friends walk past me and not seeing me with them laughing, I try to remember that everything happens for a reason. I had struggled to find out what that reason was when it happened, but now it's clear to me as ever. Without this happening, Claire and I would have never became friends, best friends, and it might sound crazy when I say that I'm glad that it happened, because it taught me a lesson. I might not always find out the reason to why people do things, and I shouldn't blame myself just because people chose me to blame. When I look back at it now, it seems ludicrous that they were mad at me for a little thing such as not making time for them. Darla realized that too, she apologized a few weeks after for saying that I wasn't a good friend, she said that it was one of the things she regrets doing and hope that I could forgive her. I forgave her, but to be honest, I was never mad at them, any of them. It seems absurd to be mad at someone for not wanting to be your friend because they can't see how great you are. I'm very grateful for what they have done for me in the past, and I always will be, but it's time to make new memories with new friends that sees the best in me. They were my best friends and now, they are in my mind as the best memories I have in middle school.
