Brielle sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with her family as they drove down the road. Her mom swayed peacefully back and forth to the song, her black hair tied into a loose bun bobbed as she swayed. Her dad kept his eyes on the road as he continued to sing the song, his dark skin shining in the light of the dimming sun as night was coming soon.
Brielle smiled, grateful for her two loving parents. The song ended everyone calmed down turning down the music. As her parents started talking about work tomorrow, Brielle tuned them out not interested in the conversation. She looked out the window seeing her faint reflection fixing her frizzy black hair, and wiping off a smudge of mascara on her light brown skin. She started zoning out she fantasizes about how in just a few months she'll be able to drive the car her grandparents got her for her 16th birthday.
Brielle stretched her arms, having been in the car for a few hours and she saw a bridge just ahead of them. She leaned against the window, wanting to get a good look at the river under the bridge as they go over it.
Just before the car goes over the bridge a man steps out into the middle of the street forcing her dad to swerve to avoid hitting the man. Her father swerves back and tries to make it back onto the road, before he could the car crashed through the bridge railing and into the icy water below.
Brielle jerked awake cold water lapping at her calves the memories of what just happened rushing back to her. She unbuckles and her eyes darted around and focusing on her parents unconscious in the front seats.
She shifted forward in the sinking car and shook her mom till she slowly regained consciousness. Her mom blinked still dazed, realizing the situation, she unbuckled herself, and by the time she fully conscious, the water had almost completely swallowed the car. Her mom tried to shove against the door, but the door doesn't budge. She continues to shove her body weight against the door, the water slowly rising up to her chest. It just took minutes for the car to submerge completely under the cold surface of the water. Her mom was still pushing against the door, bubbles escaping from the tight seal of her mouth and finally the door slowly opens. She kicks off from the seat and kicks her way out of the car. Brielle follows after her the small supply of air she has left leaves her in bubbles rising to the surface of the water.
Brielle swims for the surface and then she quickly realized her dad wasn't following after her. She broke the surface and desperately looks around for her mom for help but her mom was already swimming towards the shore. Brielle screamed for her mom who turned around frantically eyes wide.
Brielle screamed, "DAD!" and her mom realized, she started to swim back to the car, she felt that there was some type of hope. Brielle took a deep breath before diving under the water her mother not to far behind her.
Brielle made it to the car and she and yanked the driver side door open. She swam around her father and grabbed a hold of the buckle and unbuckled her dad. She hauls her father through the door she had yanked open, but her father's body comes to an abrupt stop halfway through the door. She pulls again but her dad's body doesn't move. She swims around her father and look for whatever he was caught on. She sees his pants caught on a jagged edge of the seat which her father had always meant to repair. She swims down and unhooks the pant leg from the jagged edge.
Brielle had started pulled her dad out of the car. Brielle's panic started rising because she didn't know how she was going to get her father to the surface. Just when she started to give up her mom appeared gesturing for her to hand her father over. Brielle helped her mom swim up to the surface with her dad between her and her mother, Brielle started to feel light-headed. Her lungs started to burn, craving air and right when she thought she wasn't going to make it her head broke the surface, and her lungs finally was able to take deep gulping breaths of air.
They haul her father over and up onto the shore. After a few more deep breaths, her mom spotted the man staring down at the place where the car had crashed into the bottom of the river.
"Hey please call 911 PLEASE!" Brielle's mom yelled through coughs and tears.
The man fumbled with his phone, calling 911, and telling them the location he threw the phone down and looked at us one last time before running away into the forest beyond the bridge.
Brielle took deeper breaths, her lungs still yearning for more oxygen and she realized her father was still unconscious. She crawled towards her dad and placed her ear against his chest, he definitely wasn't breathing.
"Mom! Help! He's not breathing!" Brielle screamed and started to cry as her mom snapped out of her shock and rushed to her dad and started CPR. Brielle watched as her mom frantically try to save her dad's life. She started to lose all hope as she saw the life slowly drain from her father's limp body.
Her mom gave up and just started to cry into her father's neck. Brielle stared at her father's now cold, lifeless body and started to get angry. NO, I won't lose him like this I WON'T! Brielle got up and slammed her fists on her father's chest screaming out in frustration.
"You can't leave me like this wake up!" Brielle screamed continuing to slam her fists against her father.
"Wake up!" Brielle screamed again as her mom continued to sob.
"WAKE UP!!" Brielle screamed at the top of her lungs slamming her fists down again.
Her father's eyes shot open and spurts out water spills out of his mouth and he started coughing leaving Brielle and her mom in pure shock. Brielle hugged him as her mom continued to cry but now they were tears of joy.
Brielle heard the sirens of the ambulance and looked up towards the road. She turned around she froze, eyes widening with fear a strange boy stood before her looking straight at her with utter shock and confusion. She tried to back away but the boy reached his hand out and touched her, but the hand wasn't skin it was dry bones. Brielle screamed terrified and shuts her eyes tight. She slowly opens her eyes but when she does the strange boy had disappeared. Brielle shook her head taking deep breaths trying to calm her pounding heart. She decided it would be a good idea just to forget the boy and hope that he wouldn't come to her again
