I believe that the institution tries to control your behavior, but with a good attitude, strong values, and your morality, you can rise above a negative environment. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the main protagonist Ralph is able to keep his hope of being rescued and of being civilized even as the other boys around him are being hurt, killed, or corrupted by the island and the vicious ideas from Jack. Ralph is able to keep an ember of that hope burning even as he himself is being hunted. Even in the real world, you can rise above a negative environment. Hundreds of people are abused as children or even in relationships. Those victims can have strong morals and values, as well as the will to survive, to be able to overcome that past and remain "good" in the eyes of society. Like others have said before, monsters are not born: they are made.
