A/N:

Well hello guys! New fic, yaaay! I hope you like this one as much as the other as I will be updating this one Tuesday and AL on the next. Letsa go!

Phil wasn't always deaf. No he was able to hear perfectly when he was around the age of 4, which was a bit harder for him to remember now what it was like to have this everyday use;  which everyone seemed to take for granted. If Phil could have the privilege to hear even the faintest bit, he'd be grateful. Though he couldn't remember what this ordinary function was like, as that was just over 12 years ago. However over the course of time his hearing deteriorated and he gradually became hearing impaired by the age of 5.

It started off mildly according to his mother, as at first he would always ask for her to repeat what she was trying to tell him, and it ended up getting worse and worse over the course of just a few months.

At this point Mrs Lester had taken him to a special clinic associated with those who are hard of hearing; that could talk to their doctors about certain treatments that they could receive or just purchase a hearing aid. Though Mrs Lester didn't think it'd be this bad, and was only taking him there because her friend had recommended her to take Phil, because she suggested that it might have not just been nothing. She thought it was silly that she would have to take him to somewhere like this, and at the time thought that Phil's hearing would get better as time went on. Oh how wrong she was, if only she knew...

[Le flashback]

Phil and his mother were in a fancy waiting room of the private hearing clinic. His mother was sitting on a rather comfy chair reading a newspaper while Phil was playing with the lego in the children's area on the floor. He was getting bored as there was no one currently in the room apart from the elderly couple in the corner waving their hands around to each other; yet not saying a word to one another.

Phil tilted his head in confusion. He thought it was rather odd behaviour for someone to be waving their hands around randomly, which the other seemed to understand but not Phil. He shifted over to his mother and tapped her leg gently. He was curious and wanted to know what in the world was going on with the two in the corner but didn't want to be rude.

His mother looked over her paper to see her son sitting on the floor by her feet and smiled. "What is it sweetie?" she asked gently.

"Mummy what are the lady and man doing with their hands?" he asked curiously while pointing to the couple in the corner.

His mother glanced up and looked over to where Phil was pointing. She chuckled lightly and sighed. Realizing that Phil's question had remained unanswered.

Phil frowned up at her, was he supposed to know? Was it that obvious? Because he hadn't a clue of what strange motions they were creating with their hands.

His mother smiled at him "They're speaking to each other in sign language." She stated, like it was the most normal thing in the world to do.

Phil stared at her with a puzzled expression "What's that mummy?"

"Well when someone can't hear then they can use sign language, which is what the couple over there are doing, as a method of talking to one another without the need of speaking sweetie." she explained.

"Oh! So it's like a secret code that no one else can understand?!" he asked excitedly.

She grinned "I suppose it is."

"Am I deaf mummy?" Phil asked curiously.

She ruffled his hair which Phil scowled her for "No pumpkin, you're not. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to hear me would you? Silly."

"But I can't hear you very well mummy. Is there something wrong with me?" he asked worriedly.

Mrs Lester kissed her sons mop of hair "No honey, there isn't anything wrong with you, you just are having trouble hearing is all. Nothing to worry about, it's going to be fine." She reassured him.

Phil just nodded and shuffled back to where he was previously. He took a glimpse at the couple in the corner, who had stopped signing to one another and were now smiling at him kindly, and he returned their smiles; while continuing to fail at building a small aeroplane out of the lego pieces, the instructions were obviously wrong.

It was a few minutes later that Phil's name was called and they were lead to presumably one of the doctors offices.

Phil was told to sit in a big leather chair which was huge compared to him, and was in front of the doctor's chair and besides his mother's. The doctor shook hands with Phil and Mrs Lester and introduced himself as Mr Evans but asked to be called Sam. Luckily Sam was generally a lovely guy and Phil was glad that he was his doctor.

He asked Phil a number of questions and tested his hearing with different frequencies where Phil had a button that he had to press when he heard a beeping sound. He only heard it twice...

After about half an hour a secretary came in with Phil's results which Sam discussed with his mother quietly.

"Phil seems to have a virus called cytomegalovirus, which is a virus passed on genetically, and can make children at any age hearing impaired and mostly completely deaf." He explained.

Mrs Lester stood there shocked, trying to hold back her tears but nodded anyway.

"Now the children, who have this genetic virus don't always become completely deaf. However I think that Phil might just be one of these few, but I don't know how long it will take for this to happen... Then again there could be hope that he won't, but until we find out he'll have to have something to help him hear." He explained and gave Mrs Lester a sympathetic look. She nodded and made her way back over to Phil who was swinging his legs and day dreaming in his seat which made her smile slightly.

They sat back down and Sam sighed. "Phil... your hearing as you know, is rather bad and I want to talk about what we can do to help you hear well, if that's okay with you?"

Phil nodded and went to sit on his mum's lap seeing as she looked like she was upset, though he couldn't think why, and thought the best thing to do was to snuggle into her.

"Now Phil, you can either have a hearing aid, which is this-" Sam pulled out a little plastic object which Phil presumed to be a hearing aid "Or..." he continued "You can have surgery to fit one in your ear, which effectively has its consequences and is more dangerous; however...you won't have to wear one of these-" he gestured towards the hearing aid.

Phil thought for a moment. He could have surgery, but he was sacred that something bad would happen but then the children at nursery might make fun of him because he would be wearing what an old person would usually wear. Though he could hide them behind his hair, since it was quite long and would cover them perfectly. Then no one would have to know!

"So Phil, have you decided?" his mother asked, stroking his fringe out of his eyes.

He nodded and pointed towards the objects in the doctor's hand. Sam smiled and ticked something on a sheet "Okay then! Now you can have coloured ones or see through ones..." Sam said. Holding what looked like nothing, until he focussed on what was in his other hand and he could faintly see the outline of another hearing aid. This was perfect, now no one would see! Phil again pointed to the invisible ones and Sam smiled at him.
"Perfect, well I'll see you when you come and test them out!"

Sam and Mrs Lester exchanged formal handshakes and Sam high fived Phil before leaving the clinic; passing the smiling couple on the way out.
