I had watched the scenery pass for a couple off minutes trying to decipher where we were heading. But with each turn I only grew more unsure of my surroundings.

"Where are we going?" I finally asked.

"It's a surprise," Kaminari answered simply.

I turned my attention back out the window, swallowing down any easiness that was beginning to rise. "A surprise?"

"Yup," Kaminari grinned. "Any guesses?"

I shook my head slowly. "Surprises aren't my favorite thing." Every surprise I had received up to this point had not been a pleasant one. A sliver of a memory from when Okaasan gave me a card and a new sweatshirt for my birthday appeared in my mind. It was the first time I became aware of the fact that she cared for me.

"Don't worry," he waved off my concern easily. "This is a good surprise."

I smiled, a fake, strained smile that I'm pretty sure he saw right through because he added more to his previous statement.

"We're almost there anyway."

He wasn't lying. The next turn he took put us in a movie theater parking lot. I checked my phone to see the time. The digital 5:41 that appeared on my home screen made me anxious. How long would the movie take? What time would I be back home? How angry would Mr. Yamamoto be if I came home past eight?

"What movie are we seeing?" I asked before slowly adding, "I probably... I should get home in the next hour or so."

"Don't worry, we won't be out too long," Kaminari assured me again. I began wondering if all the promises he had been making me were empty ones. "As for the movie..." he scanned the options that flashed on the screen. "How does Monsters vs. Aliens sound?"

I looked at the screen, studying the cartoon poster that was displayed for the movie. His pick did not surprise me. I glanced at the run time before checking the time again. 6:02.

Sighing, I nodded. I felt stuck in the situation. Seeing a movie was appealing, but so was getting home while Mr. Yamamoto was in a good mood. Then I could simply hide in the basement the rest of the night.

Kaminari paid for the tickets and we approached the theater it was in and then sat and viewed the previous quietly.

I felt his hand fall on mine a few moments after we sat down.
