chapter one | october 1st
Like so many winters before it, this one arrived quickly after the summer ended. The roads were littered with leaves of scarlet and ember hues and the sun cast streaky rays over the town. Each morning, the dark blanket of sky would hang there until the light of the sun broke through.
I loved winter; everything about the cold weather enticed me. From the way the snowflakes danced in the wind to the barren lines of trees that stood to attention.
Winter was the time of year where everybody joined together - whether it was a family coming together at Christmas, or the children in the town fighting with hand-crafted snowballs. Everything just seemed so much more complete and uniform.
Except, I'd never realised that winter came with it's own dangers, never realised that everything I knew could be stolen away from me in an instant.
