Chapter One
The Beginning
I'm running. I can't stop. I can hear them chasing me. All of them, hundreds upon hundreds. My legs won't stop running. I can feel my heart racing. My ears are ringing with the sound of my heartbeat. It feels like my heart is about to pound out of my chest. "Why me? Why is it always me?" I think to myself as my legs are moving faster than my head is spinning. I can't see anything. It's pitch black. But I can feel them. I can feel every step they take, every breath that leaves there mouths. I can feel them. "What are they? Why do they want me?"
"STOP! Please, just stop. What do you want with me?" I shout as loud as I can hoping the unknown creatures chasing me will hear. I can feel my legs again. They are filled with a tingle. I force my legs to stop moving. I stop running. I stop. I am giving up the fight. The chase is over. I can feel all their breaths hitting me like the wind of a storm on a beach. I turn around, not sure of what creatures lie behind me. Peeking with one eye, I see them. Dozens and dozens of red beastly eyes, all staring in one direction. Mine. These eyes are terrifying. They are filled with deceit and determination. "What or who are you all?" I ask. Silence is the answer I am left with. A snarl exits from one of the beasts. They all leap forward springing onto me. "HELP ME! STOP PLEASE STOP!' I am shouting until no more air fills my lungs.
Chapter Two
The Awakening.
"Rebeckah! Rebeckah, wake up! Wake up!" Someone has ahold of my shoulders. Gripping me so tightly it feels as if their thumbs are going to poke holes right through my shoulders at any time. My eyes shoot wide open. Only to see my best friend Anne's head directly above mine. Her long Golden blonde hair is tucked behind both ears, but her hair is so long I can feel it tickling my nose. She has a frightened, panicked look on her face.
"What? What?" I reply in a frantic voice hoping the words have actually escaped my mouth. I am breathing so heavily those two words felt impossible to say.
"Are you okay?" she asks.
" Ya ya, what's going on?" I ask unaware of what is happening.
" You tell me. You where the one frantically kicking and screaming." she says. " What on earth were you dreaming about?" she asks.
"I don't know. I have no idea. I can't remember."
That was a lie. I remembered everything about it. In fact I could probably tell it to you so vividly you would feel like you were in it. But I won't. I can't even tell my best friend. What does this mean? I have had the dream a lot recently. Every time I have it, it is exactly the same. The beastly red eyes, the snarl, then my awakening. My sheets are always all messed up. Like I was running in my bed, I am a sweaty mess, my hair is all messy and tangled like I rubbed a balloon on my head, and every time I'm so confused about what this dream means.
"Well you were dreaming about something. That's for sure." Anne says with a touch of humor in her voice.
"Yeah, ha." I say with a little chuckle.
"What time is it?" I ask because I have no idea.
"It's 2:43" she says. I can feel my face turn from confused to almost a frightened look. "What?" Anne asks.
This is so odd. Every time I awaken from this dream it is 2:43 a.m. "Oh nothing I say," this doesn't go over well with Anne. She knows me better than she knows the back of her own hand.
"Uhh, no something is wrong, do you not know that I can read your facial expressions like an open book? Come on we have been friends for 11 years." she says with a smirk but serious look on her face.
"Lately that is the same time I wake up almost every morning." I say covering up the dream.
"Well I still don't believe you, but it will have to do." she says with a slight grin.
"Okay well lets go back to sleep, we have to be up in almost three hours." Anne adds in with a sigh.
Chapter 3
The Invisible Sign
The bell sounds and first period has officially started. Mr.Strauss stands up in front of the class and announces that there has been an accident and we are to stay in his class room until further notice. Whispering and panicked looks quickly take over the room.
"What could have possibly happened, I mean school just started." Says Jessica. Ugh Jessica. I wish she would just shut up and quit thinking she's all that, it gets real annoying.
"Oh my God! We are all going to die!" shouts Drew. Did Drew really just say that. My God he never talks, great first words huh? I mean for a guy that never says much that was a pretty big statement.
"Calm down!" says Mr. Strauss. "everybody just calm down." the class quiets.
"It does not necessarily involve any students. It could just be a precaution." Questions start flying around the room.
"All I have heard is that something happened last night in the woods behind the school. Like a sighting or something." He says as Mrs. Robinson, our head principal at Wood-Chester High, is standing at the door. She places three simple knocks on the door. All twenty-seven heads in the class shift towards the door. She peeks her head in as Mr.Strauss works his way to the door.
"Mr. Strauss a word?" says Mrs. Robinson in a calm voice.
All the color washes from Mr.Strauss's face like water would shoot down a drain. He turns and takes ten steps to the middle of the room. Silence falls over the room. His face is frightened but trying to remain calm. "Cl-class" he stutters. "Looks like you'll be staying with me for a while."
Chapter 4
The Mystery in the Woods
"What's going on?" seems to be the popular question flying around the room. The room is far from silent, it's actually quite annoying. I mean, I know they like to talk, but in this case its not going to help, so why don't they just shut their mouths. There's enough confusion as it is, and everyone knows how fast rumors start. Knowing this schoo,l there are probably already a gizillion rumors traveling the school halls as we speak. According to Mr. Strauss, he is not allowed to tell us what Mrs.Robinson told him. I wonder, did she seriously think that one through. I imagine her thought process went something like "Ohhh let me just stick my head in and tell him the secret everyone is wanting to know right in front of his whole class, and then swear him to secrecy." Good job genius. Panic still fills the room. I don't know maybe this is serious, but who knows.
I quietly and unnoticeably sneak up to Mr.Strauss' desk. He looks at me with his pale face and worry filled eyes.
"Mr-Mr. Strauss" I say with a stutter.
"Yes, Rebeckah?" he says.
"What is going on in the woods?" I ask.
"I'm sorry I'm not allowed to tell you." he whispers.
"But Mr. Strauss, I won't say anything, but I need to know. I am supposed to be walking home through those woods today. Please just tell me." I beg.
"Rebeckah, I'm sorr,y I am just not allowed to tell you. I could lose my job, but take my advice and find a different way to walk home."
"But si-" I started and was cut off by an ear piercing scream that echoed throughout the halls of the school. It sounded like it came from out side. With instinct I rush to the window, along with everyone else in the school. I finally get a good clear look at the source of the scream. My heart stops. It was Anne.
