I was asked:
How can I be better at showing my character?
----------------------------------------------------------
1. Go into as much detail as possible
Though this might be an easy point, it's actually a lot more complex. It is very hard to describe a person, it is sometimes difficult to explain facial features. Looking at pictures of people who have similar features that you imagine, can help you explain what you are imagining since it is right in front of you. Also, don't be afraid to look up words that help you explain details.
----------------------------------------------------------
2. Work on one character at a time
Don't over whelm yourself with several characters to introduce, most of the time the main character is all you need for the first chapter. It also gives your readers time to figure out if they like the main character, this is your chance to get your readers to like your character if that's what your plan is.
----------------------------------------------------------
3. Be passionate about your character
Always make sure that you are proud of your character and who you've created to carry out your story. It is never beneficial if you don't really care about your character and they are the main one to pull your story together. Always be passionate about what you're writing, if you are passionate and love what you're creating it will be easier to develop down the road.
----------------------------------------------------------
4. Stay away from Google pictures
Though it may be easier to just go onto Google and look up pictures of pretty people to represent your characters, it really isn't the best way the go. Picking random people is sort of a lazy way of introducing a character. Of course, you can always use pictures for BTS or other idols, but it's usually better to just explain everyone yourself. It is a challenge but a challenge helps you improve! So try to stick to your imagination and make your readers have to think too, most of the time anyways readers don't really go by the pictures you put for your characters. (At least I don't) it's interactive for the reader to imagine the character themselves. Most of the time I see comments like, "That's not how I imagined them" and we don't want comments like that.
----------------------------------------------------------
5. Pay attention to details
The characters you create should be considered your babies, you want all the world (your readers and what not) to love your babies and appreciate them. Of course if they are meant to be hated, then let them be hated. But the most important thing to pay attention to is DETAIL. If the story is in first person, the way that your character thinks is always very important. The language or the way your character thinks gives the readers an idea of what kind of person your character is. Pay attention to how your character acts and thinks, this is how your character can stand out to readers. If you pay enough attention to your character development, then there's a possibility that your readers will have a connection to your character and truly love who you've created.
----------------------------------------------------------
6. Don't rush
What every reader hates is a rushed character. Believe me, readers have a special gift where they can tell that characters are just being thrown into the story with no real reason to be there. When you get lazy, your readers can tell!
