Rita slowly opened her eyes to the sound of the engine cutting off. She was sitting in the back of the car while Sapphire, the eldest of the three, parked the car behind what seemed like an abandoned parking lot. There were no cars around and the lamps around them were flickering as moths the size of Rita's pinkie finger buzzed around them. They were completely alone.
Lily said something to Sapphire that Rita didn't quite catch. The headache she had been harbouring since the start of the trip had come back with reinforced pain. She groaned, lifting her head from the uncomfortable position it rested on near the car window. This caught her sisters' attention.
"All good back there, Ri?" She heard Sapphire ask. Rita shook her head a little and closed her eyes again. This time, she didn't fall asleep, but could see nothing. She heard shuffling from the front of the car, probably the drivers seat as Sapphire lay a cold hand on her head.
"She'll be fine Sapphire," Lily said, completely distracted by her phone. Rita didn't need to see to know. Ever since Lily hooked up with Jacob, one of the many exes she had been on and off with in the summer, she had been texting him none stop. The only way the two seemed to get her off her phone was when they went ghost hunting or some shit like that. Sapphire tried to explain to Lily that they needed as much attention as her new 'old' boyfriend did, but when did Lily ever actually listen? Certainly not that time when they were searching a witches hut for spirits and her phone went off loudly, despite being told to put it on silent. Perhaps the other time when they were watching conspiracy theories on Slender Man and she kept talking and giggling throughout the video. It got really annoying, but they were all sisters, destined to put up with one another's crap.
"Maybe we should head back," stated Sapphire. "Rita feels a bit warm."
"No!" Rita yelped, eyes shot wide open, headache forgotten now. She'd be damned if they missed out on this next adventure. The sisters had gotten a hold of an old story about a library on Clever Street, where legend had it, an old book of sorts was displayed. According to the sources, the book was cursed to turn anything written in it real. The relic had belonged to an old man, who claimed to have written a story of himself and his wife who died in the story and, five months later prior to the story being written, in real life. No one knows what happened to the man, but the book had been labeled enchanted by a dark magic by an exorcist, locked away safely in the library.
When Rita had first heard the story, she had desperately begged her sister to sickness to find and check the book out. Sapphire, of course was in by the first word and dragged a hesitant Lily along with them, considering Lily was the only one who knew the town like the back of her hand after a series of dates she went on there. She especially liked the town's infamous cafe, LatteCat, where she claimed she had the best milkshake ever from. In fact, she had already heard the story of the book from one of the waitresses there, who knew that Lily and her sisters liked that sort of stuff. Turned out that after the date, which wasn't very pleasant, Lily wallowed in self pity instead of telling her sisters the story.
Anyway, Rita had been waiting a full week for the trip and wasn't going to miss it. As it turned out, Sapphire was going away to Japan for her twenty-second birthday for the whole of next month with her fiancé and Lily didn't care about going anywhere, especially if Sapphire wasn't there to drag her ass along. Rita could have waited a month, but she was too pumped to do so, plus, she feared that she might forget by the time the others were available. So it was literally now or never for her.
Sapphire sighed heavily. "Alright," she gave in. "But if in anyway you get worst, we're going straight home."
"Funny hearing you say that word," Lily muttered under her breath. Sapphire gave her a death stare that would have had Death scared. Rita rolled her eyes at her sister.
