It was a cool, crisp day in 1840 in the state of Virginia. Rebecca Charles looked down into the field of Mr.Macauley's cotton. She wiped the sweat from her face as she was leaning on a stick she used as a cane, as she viewed the fields of working men and young boys.
Every day on Mr.Macauley's plantations the men and young boys go out to the fields and harvest cotton. The women and their daughters work in the kitchens and prepare food and housing for the men. Clothes were not of good quality and food was scarce. So the daughters were sent to collect ingredients for the food.
Rebecca is 14 years old and resides in the same house as her mother, father, and two brothers. She has a friend that she works with in the kitchens. Her name is Abbigail. Their families are very close to each other. All the slaves here on the plantation are white. This is because they could not pay their way to America, so they decided to work in payment. Times were not so great in England, so most of them knew it was time to get out and start fresh.
