Dear Diary,
I just said goodbye to my family. My name is Scar O'Malley and I just left the most precious thing to me behind. But when I heard about this expedition, I could'nt help but thinking that the money I would get from this trip could help my parents to pay for the healthcare my little sister needs. I was helping my aunt in Bath at the tavern for the serving when I heard the sailors talking about the embarquement onboard of the Matthew's. They were speaking to each other very loudly and were supposedly drunk, maybe that's why I got to know that they needed one more person on board. Hence, being barely eighteen, I courageously went on the port to meet the boat's captain in person. When first he saw me, he was surprised at the beginning, and then astonished to know the reason that motivated me. Every seaman that was there was making fun of me, of my tiny body compared to their bigmuscles and their beard. I looked down, terrorised.
« What's the name of your sister, boy ? Asked the Captain John Cabot with a deep and amused voice.
- Abiguäel Sir. »
I was observing his shadowon the ground : gigantic, enormous and terrifying.
« Listen to me birdy, the sea is risquy. What about the pirates, the sickness, the climat.. ? Think about your pride ! Think about the hardships that you are going to have to face ! Believe me, your parents will prefer loosing a daughter rather than a son. Go back to your mother, you are too weak, too young to be a part of my crew ! »
He turned around as if nothing had happend, and the sailors went back to what they were doing with a laugh. That's when I finally dared to raise my head up.
« Hey Capitain ! » I shouted.
Surprised, all the men looked at me and turned themselves toward the captain. Some of them dropped their floor cloth, waiting for a reaction from him. Not a sound could be heard on the deck. I don't think anybody had dared to answer to himever.
« I prefer loosing my pride for someone I love rather than loosing someone I love with your ridiculous pride. »
That's how I became a sailor on the famous Matthew.
