~ I should have saved you ~

"We are gonna set a fire under Johann Schmidt's ass. What do you say, Rogers? It's your map, you think you can wipe Hydra off of it?"

"Yes, sir. I'll need a team" Steve replied.

"We're already putting together the best men."

"With all due respect, sir. So am I."

"Do you think this is too much?" I asked Peggy as I inspected myself in the mirror.

"You look beautiful Dorothy" I looked back at Peggy, she was wearing a beautiful red dress with matching heels, with red lips and simple makeup, while I was wearing a navy midnight blue dress with genes on the top part, with navy blue heels, I left my makeup fairly natural and my hair was curled.

I sighed "alright let's go."

We entered the bar with no problem but as we got further into the building the singing from the men stopped as did most of the conversations going on, all me staring at the pair of us, we manoeuvred the bar until we found my brother and Steve both were standing up staring at us, me and Steve stared at each other until leggy nudged my side "Captain, Sargent."

"Agent Barnes, Agent Carter."

I walked forward to stand in front of Steve Peggy going with me "Thea, Ma'am" James nodded at us.

"Howard has some equipment for you to try. Tomorrow morning?" I asked.

"Sounds good."

A silence passed over us, me and Steve went back to staring at each other not stung a word "I see you top squad is prepping for duty" Peggy said.

"You don't like music?" James asked.

"I do, actually. I might even, when this is all over, go dancing."

"I like the idea of going dancing soon," I said, "but if you don't have the right partner what's the point."

"0800, Captain," Peggy said and walked off.

"I better go as well, you see you tomorrow captain" I smiled at Steve and turned to James 'don't get too drunk please" I kissed him on the cheek and left following Peggy.

"Barnes go find Rogers" I looked up from the file I was reading to Colonel Phillips.

"Yes Sir" I put the file down and walked through the bunker finally finding Steve behind a shelf kissing another female officer, a mix of emotions coursed through me, mainly anger and hurt. Oh god, I was jealous "Captain," I said startling the pair to break "we're ready for you. If you're not otherwise occupied" annoyed I turned and left for the lab without waiting for Steve.

"Agent Barnes, wait," Steve said coming up behind me.

"Looks like you've finally found a girl who'll go dancing with you."

Dotty, that's not what you thought it was."

"I don't think anything, Captain. Not one thing. You always wanted to be a soldier and now you are. Just like all the rest, just like Bucky."

"Well, what about you and Stark? How do I know you two haven't been... fonduing?"

I stopped and turned back to him seeing he had also stopped, I scoffed "you still don't know a damn thing about women" I shook my head and left to the lab finding Peggy, still annoyed.

"What's go you so worked up," she asked looking up from what she was doing.

"Steve Rogers" I leaned up against the desk "he was kissing a girl, another officer, oh god I don't even know why I'm so bothered."

"Maybe because you love him."

"I, I."

"You can't deny it forever."

"Watch me, but then he suggested that I and Howard were well ya know."

She rolled her eyes "all men are bloody idiots" she out the file down.

"You don't have to tell me that, he's with Howard now might as well go and see what shield he picked out" we walked towards where Steve and Howard were, Steve was holding a circle shield standing by a table full of other types of sheds, Howard in the other side of the table.

"Are you quite finished, Mr Stark? Peggy asked, "I'm sure the Captain has some unfinished business."

Steve looked at me with frowned eyebrows he obviously didn't expect me to tell Peggy what I had seen, Steve held the shield up against him "what do you think?"

Peggy and I looked at each other, she then picked up a gun firing four shots at Steve who quickly hid behind his shield not a mark on it. "Yes. I think it works" she noted "Dorothy?"

"Oh I couldn't agree more Peggy" all men looked at us shocked, we left the lab passing Steve as we went.

A week later Steve and his new team including James left to take down Hydra bases I had managed to say goodbye to both, neither of them had any time to write but we got continual reports of hydra basses getting destroyed, the numbers in the map back in London we're getting smaller.

And I knew he always had me with him, one day a month after they had left, the officers at London including me and Peggy were required right watch an army video on the missions Steve were on, the camera showed him feeling everyone where the next base was and checking him compass, the top part of the compass had a picture of me stuck in it. My cheeks heated in adoration, leggy nudged my side "don't say a word" I mumbled.

A week after that I had a horrible feeling that just wouldn't go away, I arrived at the bunker at the same time as usual and got on with what I was meant to do, nothing was out of place but yet I couldn't get the feeling out of me that something terrible was going to happen.

"Is everything alright?" Peggy asked me.

"Yes, I mean a bit worried but I guess that just me missing my brother and Steve. That's all."

I got on with my work until a white-hot pain irrupted in my heart, I cried out in pain I knew what was wrong "Dorthy what's wrong" Peggy asked coming to me.

"James, something has happened to James."

My eyes darted from one soldier to another, Steve and his team were back they had managed to capture Zola but I could see James. As Steve exited the plan I knew no one else was going to come out, I chocked back a sob the realisation of what was happening washed over me like a bucket of ice-cold water shocking my entire system. I put a hand over my mouth as the sibs became too much and almost started choking me, tears blurred my vision but I could just make out a blue figure walking over to me.

A strong pair of arms wrapped around me, I felt safe like I was home and I knew who it was. He didn't say anything he just held me as I screamed and cried over the loss of my twin brother.

I'll always love you James. Always.
