There was a weird sound. Not so much of a clicking. It could have been a creaking perhaps. My mind runs me the scenarios, however idiotic they may be. My back is pressed against the head of the bottom bunk, my brother sleeping soundly above.
"What if it's a bat? Crawling across the ceiling ready to swoop down and bite us?" I ask myself from across the bed. I sit on the edge looking back at myself with a slight smirk. My own lips drooping at the comment.
"There aren't any bat's in here... They're too big to fit in through the window..." My response acts more as a way to reassure myself, that is until an echoey hush comes from within the murky blackness surrounding me. A chill running down my back with the sudden noise.
"What if that's a snake...? It could swallow you whole and nobody would know until it was too late and you had been all gobbled up." This time I don't reply. I have no words for something so stupid... If it is at all stupid. I'm scaring myself again. I always let this happen. My arms act by themselves as I pull the scratchy cover over my legs and scootch down the squeaky mattress, the springs digging into me as I try to get comfortable again. It's pretty difficult in this bed... In this place. Nothing here is comfortable. Somehow I liked my birth pod more then this place.
"You're going to sleep? We're bored though." This time I directly ignore myself and after a few moments it seems like I have taken the hint. Only barely peaking out from below the cover I notice the end of the bed completely empty... I gave up easier today than usual. Maybe I'll end up getting an hour of sleep or more today.
This is just a teaser. The next chapter will be a lot bigger than this one. Considering I only wrote about 280-300 words in this chapter.
