hi, i'm cameron. since you don't know me, i'll tell you a little bit about myself. i'm 15 and am smack dab in the middle of three kids. i have an older sister, caroline (18) and a baby brother, colby (8 mos.) what do i look like? well, i have long blonde hair and brown eyes. i'm 5'4" and extremely thin. i think i'm super ugly, but one thing that annoys me about my face is that i have a stupid beauty mark just above my lip, but i try not to think about it too much.
i guess you can say i have a pretty decent life. i'm a straight "A" student and am on highest honors, i have an amazing family who loves me, and i have a roof over my head. what more could i ask for? i know, a boyfriend who wants to spend time with me. i mean, i have a boyfriend, jack, but all he ever wants to do is hang out with his friends. i seldom get to see him anymore.
today is thursday, so i wake up, take a quick shower, and change into a white tank top that says "hakuna matata bitches" and black leggings. i brush my teeth, then head downstairs and eat a piece of bacon for breakfast. i'm super self conscious, so i barely eat anything anymore. my parents worry about me; they think i have anorexia, but caroline says it's just a phase and that i'll get over it in no time.
after mom finishes feeding colby, she drives caroline and me to school. it's hard being in the same school as caroline because she is the popular senior and i'm the lowlife freshman. it's like i'm living my life in her shadow, which really sucks. people expect me to be just like her, even though i'm a completely different person.
we arrive at school and i head to my first class, geography. this week, we're learning about the inuit tribe in barrow, alaska, which is 2,929 miles from here, so please explain to me why we need to learn about them. my next class is history, so i walk down the hallway to mr. ronin's room.
"good morning cameron. how are you?" he asks as i walk in.
"fine, thanks," i reply.
i take a seat in the back, next to a tall girl with curly brown hair. soon, all the extra seats fill up with students ranging from ages 14-17. halfway through the lesson, the girls sitting next to me hands me a piece of paper. i open it and read it: hey! i'm really stuck on some of the problems from our homework last week, and i was wondering if you could help me with them since you're like the smartest person here. if you want to help me, you can meet me at my locker (#385) after class. thanks! -alexandra
i turn to her and nod in agreement.
after class, i start to walk out the door, but mr. ronin stops me by saying, "cameron, the school board just informed me that since you're on highest honors, you have at write a summary about an important point in history. they said i get to choose, so for you i chose japan's isolation. it's due monday and counts as 50% of your grade."
"ok, thank you," i reply, as i step outside the door.
i head down the hall to locker #385, and i realize that jack's locker is right next to her's. "hey alexandra," i say as i approach her.
"hi..." she starts, but trails off since she doesn't know my name.
"cameron," i inform her.
"well cameron, it's nice to meet you," she says as she shakes my hand.
"nice to meet you too. so, what do you need help with?" i ask.
"well, can i talk to you more about it at lunch? i have to go to science now," she says.
"yeah, of course," i reply, then turn around and start walking to english. when i turn around, i see something that i've never wanted to see in my entire life.
