"favorite food?" jaehyun asked, playing along with taeyong's request of twenty questions.
"fried chicken, of course. it's only the best food in the world. first kiss?" taeyong giggled, shoving the last bite of his tteokbokki into his mouth.
"it was my senior year of high school with my ex-boyfriend, doyoung." jaehyun replied, slightly bitter at the memory.
"you still love him right?" taeyong questioned, knowing the answer.
"he was my first everything. a part of me will always love him." jaehyun sighed, taking a spit of his flat soda.
"do you wish you could be with him right now?" taeyong continued to dig for answers.
"no, i want to be sitting on my living room floor eating tteokbokki with you." jaehyun replied, showing off his deep dimples.
"what happened between you two, if you don't mind me asking? taeyong asked.
"well, we met senior year of high school. i fell madly in love with him and he simply didn't. we went to the same college, bought a condo together, and almost adopted a baby together. one night, he came home and told me he cheated on me. he said he never loved me and he disappeared." jaehyun hissed, pain prevalent in his answer.
"i'm sorry, that's devastating. to have your life built and then have it shattered in a couple of minutes. how long ago?" taeyong replied, being more and more interested in the man that sat across from him.
"two months ago. we were in the last stages of adopting seungjae. by this time, my family would've been complete. i tried to adopt him, even after he left. i couldn't think about leaving him in that orphanage for a second longer. but, the adoption agency wouldn't allow me to adopt him without a partner. now that would be my wish, to have him here. safe, warm, and loved. i knew the day i met him that he was supposed to be mine. to raise, to love. and without him, i don't see much of a purpose for me." jaehyun explained, choking back his own tears.
taeyong wasn't sure what compelled him to say what he said. but he meant it, every word he said. he knew that it wasn't a coincidence that jaehyun had saved his life and everything about his entire life was anything but a coincidence. taeyong didn't do it because he felt indebted toward jaehyun. quite the opposite, because he would do just about anything to make sure jaehyun was okay.
"i'll help you, adopt seungjae." taeyong stammered out, eyes widening as he realized what he said.
taeyong expected himself to take it back, but he knew he meant it.
"w-what? taeyong, i could never ask that of you." jaehyun whispered out, knowing fully well that he would do anything and ask anything of anyone for his child.
"you're not asking, i'm offering. i don't tell many people this, but i was an orphan. my parents died when i was two in a car crash. for, 16 years, i lived in a orphanage until i was 18 and legally allowed to access my inheritance. i remember what it was like, when a couple promised to adopt me, only to disappoint me. it happened countless times. you're not about to let this child down. we are not going to let this child down." taeyong replied.
"you don't understand taeyong. this isn't just going to pick up this child up together and calling it a day. the agency won't even look at our file unless we are married, now that they've seen to what extent i would go for seungjae. then maybe, they would be willing to set up an interview. not to mention the countless paper work we would have to do. you don't know what you are getting yourself into." jaehyun explained, feeling his heart break more and more.
"jaehyun, when you found me, i was seconds away from killing myself. ending my existence. and then you come and save my life. and then you tell me about this child that is just like me. and you need help to give him a better life. so then i think, i have all the means to change this child's future, with you. and i think about him, sitting on railing of some random guy's apartment complex because i didn't help when i could. so i am asking you, please let me help you. not for you, or for me, but for him."
jaehyun's smile spread ear to ear. he was the angel that jaehyun had been waiting for. the one his mother promised he would get if he was kind to the world.
"taeyong."
he looked up from his lap, staring back deeply into jaehyun's eyes. wondering what the hell he was thinking. he's unsure what to expect when he saw the smile spread on his lips and his eyes glisten with hope.
"yes?"
"marry me."
