In the far future or distant past there was a great thriving civilization that was driven by technology, everything had a some form of tech incorporated into it. But not all were ok with this. A group of people thought that technology was "unnatural" and "the true route of evil", so this group of people set out and found a new world that was untouched by industry and the steel of man. A new society was made, a society devoid of technology and lived completely natural on there own.
Hundreds of not thousands of years later the society that was now a nation still hated technology but knowledge was lost. The people had forgotten what machines and technology was, but they knew that it was a "horrible abomination" and that it apparently was a "freak of nature" what ever it was. Tales of tech had turned to cryptic tales told around campfires and kids to freak them out. But deep inside the people's hate somehow turned to fear.
