Chapter 1: Audition

Start from the beginning

The world faded away as I became Juliet, speaking to someone who she had so naively fell in love with. Not knowing the tragic fate that awaits them.

“Stay but a little, I will come again.” I finish softly.

Claps made the world come back in focus. With a small smile at Romeo I turned and gave a little bow at the judges and some of the students who were observing the auditions. The judges smiled at us as we exited the stage.

“You went great out there,” I said as soon as we were off the stage, he looked away awkwardly. I swear the boy was destined for the part, especially considering his name. Silence hung heavy in the air as I waited for his move.

“You were too,” he muttered finally, looking at the door longingly. This was becoming one of the most awkward conversations of my life very quickly.

“So Romeo, right?” he nodded not looking away from the door. I felt kind of bad, maybe I should let him out of this situation I had caused. But, in my defence, I was trying to be nice. “Well its great to meet you Romeo. I’m Lola by the way.”

“Yeah, cool. I’ve got to go,” walking towards the door, he paused with his hand on the door handle. Glancing back, a small smile graced his face. “It was nice to meet you too, Lola.” Slipping out the door he left me gaping at him. Boys are weird.

The door almost instantly opened again to reveal a rumbled looking red head, who was fussing over her hair. Glancing up at me, her passive face transformed into the bubbly one she usually sported.

“Hey Lola, how did you go?” Tilting her head at me slightly in a way that was extremely Sarina.

“Not bad, I thought you were watching from the audience?” She shrugged, her attention going back to her fiery red locks. Leaning in, I plucked a leaf from her hair. A small chuckle escaped from my lips as I spotted another. “It looks like you were in a fight with a tree,” I observed, flicking both leaves at her.

“Well, the tree lost,” I opened my mouth, a witty response on my tongue. The door opening for a third time cut me off. My boyfriend strolled in, looking every bit as rumbled as Sarina. My eyes flickered between the two, and suspicion bubbled up as I took them both in. Just as quickly as the idea appeared I squashed it, then burnt it and spread the ashes. It was stupid to let the antics of my parents influence my judgement about my friends. I bet Sarina tripped and fell into the bush besides the bathroom with those ridiculously high heels she insisted on wearing (Not that mine were any better). And Will probably was just screwing around with his friends. God, no need to be paranoid Lola.

Smiling, Will walked over to me and placed a kiss on my waiting lips. Will would never hurt me like that. It just wasn’t possible.

“Where were you?” I pouted, in what I hope was a sexy manner. Judging by the look I caught from Sarina it wasn’t. Her nose was scrunched at me, like she smelt some thing bad. Dropping the pout, I just stared blankly at him. “So?”

“I had to do some things,” raising an eyebrow, he lifted his shoulder. “Lacrosse stuff.”

At least that explained his rumpled state. Turning around towards Sarina, her face was blank of emotion. Giving her a questioning stare, I retrieved my phone from the top of my thigh-high’s. The school uniforms we had weren’t exactly practical, since theres no pockets present in the girls uniform. Which is a real pain in the behind. Many of the girls had resorted to stuffing them in they’re bra’s or, god forbid, leave them in they’re bags.

Seeing that we still had another 20 minutes, I suggest we go grab a bite at a small cafe off campus. This is technically against school rules, but it hasn’t stopped us or any other students before.

My heels sunk into the soft ground of the football oval as we crossed to the back of the school. Glancing around to see if there was any staff watching us, we slipped behind the green hedge that surrounded the fence when we saw we were in the clear. It’s not like we could have just walked up to the gates, security would chew us up and spit us out.

Giggling, Sarina and I jogged to the street holding hands with Will shaking his head at us as he walked behind us.

Smiling to myself, I couldn’t imagine how my life would be without the two bright lights that brightened up my day.

A shriek from my right scared me straight out of my thoughts. Letting out a shriek of my own the ground rushed towards me and I gracefully face planted the concrete. Well, about as graceful as one can be when face planting. A few curses slipped from lips as I rolled onto my back looking into the clear blue sky. How peaceful. Then my eyes diverted to the giggling of a certain red head who had a certain taken boys arm around her waist. I can’t believe my boyfriend caught his girlfriends best friend, instead of his actual girlfriend.

They both looked down at me when the finally sensed the laser beams I was shooting at them with my eyes. At least Will looked a tine bit guilty as he walked over to help me up.

“Are you alright, babe?” he asked, putting his hands on my cheeks. With a smile, I nodded up at him.

In this moment I could do without one of the bright lights.
