hwang hyunjin was only slightly nervous about starting a new school in the middle of the year. he'd always found making friends easy - his outgoing, bubbly but slightly mysterious personality meant that it was hard not to like him.

he'd moved schools simply because they hadn't been able to afford a new car after their old one finally broke down, and his old school was really much too far away to walk. this school was a lot closer to home (in fact, he could walk here in the space of ten minutes) so his family had decided that both he and his sister transfer in the middle of the year.

hyunjin wasn't afraid of the catching up he'd have to do in regards to schoolwork - he was bright enough to get up to speed with everyone else quickly.

the only thing that hyunjin wasn't looking forward to was dancing, even though it was his hobby and one passion. why? the school dance squad was currently only girls. and he was dreading being named as that one guy who turned up girl's audition. not that he wouldn't do it anyway, this afternoon when the audition was planned.

his dance was running through his mind as he opened the door labelled "D406", slightly out of breath due to the fact that he had just ran up four floors - the bus had been late.

thankfully, hyunjin spied an empty seat towards the back of the room. his neighbour looked approachable enough and he was just about to strike a conversation when the classroom door opened again and their professor swept in, a bad mood apparent.

hyunjin decided he'd wait until after to talk to the raven-haired boy in the desk adjacent to his.

it was about halfway through the period when the door to the classroom opened again. a tall boy - taller than hyunjin himself, and much bulkier - entered, snickering and seeming unfazed despite the professor's clear annoyance directed at him.

"sorry, i've explained at administration," the boy simply said as he sat down. the professor - Dr Kim - nodded her head as if the boy had somehow provided a satisfactory answer.

hyunjin was about to question his neighbour but the expression he saw stopped his words mid-formation. the raven-haired boy - which he'd sub-consciously labelled as cute - was almost quivering in fear, his eyes carefully focused on the back of the guy's head who had just entered.

odd, hyunjin thought.

one hour later, hyunjin still hadn't spoken a word to the boy beside him, although he'd spent much of the time he wasn't taking notes staring at the boy.

he'd noticed that the raven haired hadn't once removed the fearful look from his eyes, or the quiver of his head whenever he lowered his head to take notes.

very odd.

even more so than his strange behaviour, hyunjin noted the boy's features. they were quite boyish, but lines of worry had driven out any shine to his eyes. hyunjin found himself wondering what the boy would look like with a smile on his face.

by the end of the period, hyunjin had worked out that the boy was desperate for help - but help from what, he didn't know.

it was strange how much he'd observed from just one side of a guy's face.

but if the boy needed help, he'd help.

hyunjin finally took his chances and spoke up as they were leaving the classroom - choosing to wait until the chunky latecomer dude had left - hyunjin assumed he was the cause of the fear hyunjin could sense  from his neighbour.

"hey."

the raven haired swivelled around sharply. his face relaxed once he saw hyunjin standing there. when the boy made no gesture to suggest he was going to talk or introduce, hyunjin continued.

"i'm hyunjin," he said.

"jeongin." the boy looked around as if afraid of someone overhearing him. "i've got to go."

hyunjin simply furrowed his brows as jeongin practically ran out the classroom without a sound, taking right, away from where he'd learnt the cafeteria was, despite it being lunch.

hyunjin was confused by the boy's strange actions but no doubt intrigued. one day in, and hyunjin had already got his attention on someone. in a friend way, of course.

the strange feeling in his gut had nothing to do with the boy's youthful, cute features at all.
