"Why don't you go outside and play?" My mother said through grit teeth, trying to restrain her own anger.

"That sounds like a great idea Mom!" I said, faux excitement in my voice. "Tell me, should I play in the halls where other people live, or out in the parking lot?" I asked, "Well, maybe the parking lot isn't the best idea, seeing as it's pouring!"

She shook her head, putting her face in her hands. "Just do something, and stop complaining! You have no reason to!"

"No reason..." I grumbled, grabbing onto the door handle, "I'll be back." Walking out, I made sure to shut the door gently. I didn't need other people to know I'm angry-.

As I looked up, I saw two other kids. They seemed to be about my age, both girls. They were looking at me with shock. Or, at least one was. I couldn't tell what the other was doing, as she was wearing a Halloween mask or something. The masked one had bright blue hair pulled into pigtails. Why would you wear something like that out of the house?

The other girl had long, brown hair and striking green eyes. She was the perfect image of the beauty standard, and just looking at her made me feel a little insecure.

Without looking away, I asked, "How thin are these walls?" Silently hoping no one heard the 'conversation' between me and my mom.

"Pretty thin." The one with the mask responded. Wow, ok. Not a girl, that is not a girl.

I ran a hand down my face. "So did everyone hear me yelling at my parents, or just you two?"

The brunette chuckled lightly, "Just us. The walls aren't that thin."

I slumped in relief. This isn't how I wanted to meet my new neighbors; I didn't want to meet them at all.

I sheepishly scratched the back of my neck, "Well, Um, My name's Y/N. I promise I don't yell all the time." I joked, trying not to look like a psycho.

The boy with the mask laughed and shook his head. I assume he was smiling, but it was hard to tell when all I could see was his eyes. "This is Ash. She doesn't live in the building." He motioned towards her as he spoke. Ash's cheeks dusted a light pink as she waved. "And I'm Sal, but my friends call me Sally face. I'm in the apartment right over there," he jabbed a thumb behind him.

"Sally face?" I questioned.

"Some kids at my old school called me that to make fun of me. I figured if I owned up to the name they couldn't use it against me." He shrugged.

"Smart," I nodded, "'wish I had the same mind set."

He hummed in response, glancing over at Ash.

As he looked away, I took my own glance at the officer who was still standing by the neighboring apartment. We both glared at each other.

Sal turned back to me, catching me and the officer mid stare. "Hey, why don't we show you around? There are a few other people in the building I'm sure you'd like to meet."

Oh god, more people? Really? All I wanted to do was go outside, smoke, and feel bad about myself. Now, I can't even mope in peace.

"Yeah sure, sounds like fun. I've been dying to get away from my family for a bit." I joked, "Twenty-three hours in a car will do that to a person."

Ash smiled, and I think Sal did as well.

As we got on the elevator, I took one last glance at the officer. He seemed off to me, like he wasn't supposed to be there. Then again, this whole building seemed off to me, so who knows.

The moment the elevator doors closed, I turned to the two. "What's going on in that apartment? The one next to mine?"

"We don't know," Ash said, "No one really knows."
