Chapter 1: Her sincere thoughts, his inner thoughts

When she opens her eyes, it is the third day of her marriage to the renowned General Hai Bojing. As one of her dowry maids is combing her hair as she softly laughs.

His name is really something alright. "Hai" means the sea while "Bojing" means gentle waves. Yes, he is definitely a man with a mind as deep as the sea. But, gentle waves? Hahaha! What a joke.

Her mother-in-law might hope that her only son will be someone who is gentle in his manner but upon seeing him at night tells her that he is anything but gentle.

"Chuntao, have you seen General Hai?"

Chuntao stops combing her hair and looks at her questioningly, "Furen¹, Chunhua told me that the General is at the receiving hall with lao taitai²."

"Just do a simple hairstyle. Dongmei, prepare a simple white-coloured outfit for me."

As she further checked inside her jewellery box, she then sees a carved white-coloured jade bangle. She stares at it for a few seconds and then simply wears the bangle. The bangle actually is given by her husband when they are engaged as a token of their relationship. In return, she has given him a carved green-coloured jade to be worn as a waist pendant.

She never saw him wearing it in their short meeting than during her past lifetime. Ironically, they are living as a husband and wife for just three days before he went to the western region without any single word.

During her pregnancy, he was not there with her due to the sudden war. When she died, he was not there too. He only returned when her daughter reached her first birthday. Her daughter's first birthday was the same day she died. How devastating it must have been for her daughter then.

Chuntao and Chunhua are casually talking with each other when they both realize that Jia Huian is staring at the mirror with tears in her eyes.

Chuntao immediately ran to her side before she gently wipes her eyes, "Furen, are you alright?"

"Chuntao, I am fine. We will be returning to the Prime Minister's residence later this morning. Now, we will go to the receiving hall to greet both the General and my mother-in-law."

Chuntao and Chunhua exchanges glance with each other and thought that their mistress seems to be treating the General as if he is still a stranger. For two nights, the General never left their mistress at nighttime till the break of dawn. All those noises... They then furiously blushed when they think about it.

Jia Huian sees this and smile, "Chuntao... Chunhua... Starting from tonight, all of you can sleep well at night. There is no need for all of you to wait during nighttime. Young ladies needed enough sleep..."

Chunhua then asks, "Furen, what do you mean? What if the General will come again for tonight? We have to wait outside the sleeping chamber. If we don't, we will be branded as unruly by the servants here."

Jia Huian smiles as she gently pats on Chunhua's hand, "He will not come for tonight... The four of you are very loyal to the Jia and that I understand."

She stares at both of them before calling her other dowry maids, "Listen to what I am going to say as I will only say this just once. Chunhua, Chuntao, Dongmei and Jinghua... You have been serving me for more than 10 years now and I have considered each of you like my own sister. If, one day, I have a child and something happens to me... (Take a deep breath) Take care of her on my behalf. If that child wanted to remain here, one of you shall be the General's concubine and raise my child as her own. If that child wanted to stay elsewhere, send a word to my father and he will know what to do. There will be a day that each of you should settle down for marriage but if anything happens to me, one of you need to stay with her till she reaches her adulthood."
