Why Are Some People So Cruel?

I personally like to give people the benefit of the doubt and choose to believe, under most circumstances, some people were treated like shit their whole lives and just grew up jaded and heartless. Obviously though, we can't blame how we turn out on how we were brought up. Yes, it can scar us, but at the end of the day, we all have to take responsibility for our actions at some point. However, there are some people in this world that are, to put it bluntly, just assholes. Although, being someone who's been through some shit myself, I've come to realize that some cruel people are just mentally hurting. Maybe they secretly hate themselves, so in turn, they treat other people like they're garbage, in hopes it'll make them feel a tiny bit better. It usually doesn't though and if destroying someone's happiness makes someone feel good, they're probably just a sadistic jackass.
