So just to clarify, we're back in Lexi's POV. Another huge thanks to Maddie for the last chapter, I think we can all agree that it was amazing!
Chapter Twenty
“I’m meeting with Ben in about 15 minutes… I’m going to tell him,” Poppy sighed over the phone.
“That’s great, Poppy. He will handle it so well, trust me.”
“Anyway, I better go. I’ve got to stop at the shop on the way, I’m desperately craving chocolate.”
I laughed and sat up, swinging my legs over the side of my bed. “Yeah, I should probably get up too…” The clock next to my bed read 10.30am. Oops… I usually left the sleeping in thing to Brooke…
“You’re still in bed?! Wow, lazy!” Poppy joked.
Smiling at the humour in her voice, I said goodbye, wished her luck and told her to call me as soon as she was done. It was nice to hear her joking and laughing… it had been a while.
I messily made my bed, then took a quick shower, washing the days of salt out of my hair. When I got out, I looked at myself in the mirror, and barely recognised the person staring back at me. There were still faint bruises on my chest from the near-drowning experience, but other than that, I was darker than I had ever been, my hair was light and already forming messy waves, and there was a alive feeling about me that I hadn’t had for a while.
The beach life really was amazing.
After throwing my bikini and a loose, deep blue dress overtop, I headed downstairs.
I passed Kaitlin on the way, who was in a hoodie, which was strange for the insanely hot weather we’d been having. She smiled at me, but rushed past and slammed the bathroom door shut. I felt for her, it must suck being so sick in the middle of summer! The poor thing probably had an intense temperature. Before I’d reached the bottom of the stairs, Dex came running up past me towards the bathroom. She was lucky to have someone so attentive looking after her.
Downstairs was quiet. I grabbed an apple out of the fruit bowl and headed outside. Sure enough, Sky and Brooke were leaning against the fence, talking to Ashton and Blake. I mean, was Brooklyn anywhere these days that Blake wasn’t?! It was quite cute, really, if not a little sickening. But I was happy for them.
“Hey Lexi!” Blake called, being the first to see me.
His eyes were still shinning after their first date last night. The two were really just so adorable! As soon as Brooke had walked in the door, we’d pounced on her and extracted all the dirty details. Well, it was probably the cleanest date I’d ever heard of, but it was still adorable!
Brooke deserved to be happy the most out of everyone I know. I smiled and waved, my opinion of Blake increasing due to the way he treats Brooke.
The girls turned around and grinned at me. “Morning, sleepyhead!” Sky teased.
I rolled my eyes. “I’ve been speaking to Poppy, actually.”
They all nodded and Brooke pulled me up to the fence. “We’re going out today!”
“Oh? Where to?”
“We’re hitting the big city, baby!” Sky hollered, raising her hands to the sky.
I snorted and took a bite of my apple.
“What did you do to your hair?” Ashton spoke for the first time that morning, looking at me in confusion.
“Excuse me?”
“Oh god… here we go.” Brooke moaned, putting her head in her hands.
“It’s all…fluffy….” He gestured to my hair, which had obviously dried frizzy. It’s not my fault!! The heat really got to it!
I grinned, flipping it over my shoulder. “Don’t you read vogue? Frizzy is the new black.”
Brooke gaped at me, and Skyler laughed.
“It looks horrible,” Ashton snorted. I could hear the teasing tone in his voice, however, as I was becoming quite accustomed to.
“Yeah well you don’t exactly look too fresh either, do you?” I threw right back.
“I pride myself on my disheveled look, thank you.”
I couldn’t keep a straight face, and laughed. Rolling my eyes, I turned back to the group, who were eying us weirdly.
“…What?” I asked.
Blake shook his head. “I don’t get you two.”
“There’s nothing to get. Mutual annoyance is a fun game to play.” Ashton said impassively, shot me an amused look, and left.
That was weird. And everyone was still looking at me.
“Did we miss something or?” Sky asked.
“What? I’m not a horrible person, I am capable of not killing him!”
“And that’s it?”
“I’m so confused, what are you guys even talking about?”
Brooke and Blake shared a look, one of those looks that people who like each other can have, and dropped the subject.
“So, we’re taking the 12 o’clock ferry to the city across the water. We all have things we need to do, and we’re not leaving you here. Sound good?”
I nodded, enjoying the prospect of going out for the day. “Sounds great.”
Back inside, I tied my exceedingly frizzy hair into two plaits, and packed a small bag with my wallet, phone, camera and what not. The six of us met by the fence at about 11.30.
“Okay, let’s hit the city losers!” Sky hollered, leading the way to the ferry building.
