"Oh, Rio!" I let out an elated sigh. "We are here!" I exclaimed, while straitening my shoulder length, light brown hair in front of our motel's stained, old, bathroom mirror. "And we are SO going to make it ours..." Olivia materialized behind me, her olive skinned arm circling the small of my back.
"I have to say I admire your eagerness, even after discovering this super dingy motel and all." She wrinkled her cute, pointy nose. She looked so clean and dolled up in contrast with the dull walls and the dim room light.
"I think it's got character." I added, filled with excitement. It was my very first time outside of the states and not even our cheap accommodations were going to put a dent on my enthusiasm.
"You look hot!" My friend disclosed, while buttoning the top button of the back of my tiny, lace, forest green dress. I laid the straightener down and placed a kiss on her glittery cheek.
"Well, thank you!" I said, giving her a tiny spank. Her warmth was one of the first things that drew me to her when we first met about a year ago.
I remembered all too well that day. I had caught a glimpse of her, sobbing in some dark corner, while I did my usual Starbucks stop during my lunch hour. The stars must've aligned because the drive through was closed for the first time since I had been coming there, forcing me to go inside.
She had seemed the loneliest person in the whole world to me. I wasn't particularly extroverted, but there was something in the way her huge, brown eyes were staring into the glass window that reminded me of myself. I hadn't been able to take my eyes off her profile while standing in line, so I headed to her table pretending to need a coffee recommendation. She lifted her sadness-filled eyes upon hearing my voice, a broken smile spread across her face.
The rest was history.
"I'm so glad we decided to do this!" I admitted, snapping from the memory and slipping my earrings on. Olivia took the mascara from inside her makeup tote and applied a couple more layers to her already long eyelashes. She decided to tie her long, wavy, blonde hair in a high ponytail.
"I wouldn't have done it with anyone else but you, chica!" She bumped her round hip against mine. "Are you ready for this?" She asked, raising an eyebrow naughtily.
"Let's do it!" I intertwined my arm with hers and slipped my feet inside my black pumps on our way out.
We hurried down the dark, unkempt motel stairs. The man at the messy front desk must've been about a hundred years old, but he whistled flirtatiously as he saw us walk by.
Olivia started with one of her laughing fits, the kind she would usually get whenever she was both happy and nervous at the same time.
Her laughter became so contagious that I found myself laughing as well, even though I still wasn't entirely sure why.
We opened the ancient, creaky wooden doors and we stared, in shock, at the insane number of people flooding the streets. All of them wearing colorful, leaving-little-to-the-imagination type garments and oversized accessories. The multitudes seemed to be headed in all directions, while the loudest Samba played all around us.
Girls wearing huge feathers and tiny, jewel encrusted bikinis marched center amid the chaos.
We exchanged a slack jawed look and squeezed each other's hands tightly.
"And I was worried this dress was too revealing..." Olivia's whispered in my ear, while a couple of tan, muscular dudes ogled us both in passing.
"Let's find some drinks, shall we?" I pulled her into the horde of festive individuals as she otherwise, I strongly suspected, would just stay by the entrance of our motel indefinitely.
